A reviewer said that a pewter mug leaches the metal when used and causes the soap to assume a gray color. Anyone experience this? Thanks.
It will depend on the composition of the particular mug. There's no set definition for what metals are contained in the alloy called "pewter". Generally it's mostly tin (which does not tarnish easily), plus copper, antimony and other metals. Traditionally, silver & lead were also used. The tendency of the metals to oxidize (& what, if any coating was used) will affect whether the mug will color the soap. You could try asking Vulfix regarding the composition & finish of their pewter mugs. There are some beautiful, inexpensive stainless steel mugs and shaving bowls that you wouldn't have to worry about. (I do understand the appeal of pewter though.) Antique pewter shaving mugs and tableware should not be used with soap/food due to the lead content IMO.
Hello, I have been using a pewter bowl earlier, without negative consequences such as wearing, coloring of the lather or else. It was a recent construction with a smooth finish but then I changed for a larger clay bowl (2nd image, on the right) and I immediately noticed that size matters as far as lathering is concerned !
I found wider and rounder is better. Gotta' swing that brush! What I use now: I dont feel comfortable with the ceramic mug in the tile bathroom so I just got these: I would have loved to find a pewter mug with these shape characteristics. Ill have to do with the stainless /plastic.
