I am new to the site, and was reviewing the posts - one thing I haven't seen was warm shaving cream dispensers. I remember getting one for my dad when i was 10, 30 years ago and way too young to have asked him how he likes it - (I think it was Wilkenson or Schick) Anyway, has anyone used one? Conair HLM11CH Chrome Hot Lather Machine
Someone probably has used it, but those take cans of goo. Not too many folks around here using canned goo.
Wow that was a quick reply - I have been using Barbasol and in an earlier post mentioned I just started using a soap and brush. You know I was just seeing that people called the canned stuff "goo" - Taking it that is not a good thing...
eww GOO!!! ( wait i got into that one the other day) In all honestly I heard that they are breeders for mold and things of that nature... I know nothing for sure.. Do not use goo myself. Good warm water a good brush and a good soap or cream is all you need. Fuzzy
I have been to a couple of barbers that use those. Granted not for face shaving but for when they would do the back of the neck. It was quite pleasant having that warm lather.
You guys really should give Aveeno gel one try. I promise you that you will agree that it is good, for goo.
Hi there, Those look pretty nice if you're thinking of them as a gift for someone who uses that sort of shaving cream. I believe you'll find those are more of a convenience rather than shaving aid, in that it mostly provides a nicer feel to the lather. I'd bet every single member here uses something other than stuff like Gillette Foamy, or Edge gel, except in rare instances. We've found that a shaving brush and soaps/creams really help make our shaves much better in comfort and effectiveness. That goes for the members who use cartridges, as well as the straight razor users, and everyone in between. Hehe, I woulda liked one of those dispensers a while back. Martin
Well stated. Most folks around these parts are using specially formulated, "old style" shaving soaps or creams that would not work in one of these machines. Like Tracy stated I've been to barbers who use those machines for shaving the back of your neck. It does feel good, but I wouldn't be interested in one for face shaving. I've seen other posts that indicate these machines seem to mechanically fail a lot too so keep that in mind if you're thinking of a purchase.
I have had a couple of these years back before I knew any better. I got them at garage sales for a dollar a piece, I think I got ripped off at that price. I think they ended up in the donation pile last time I moved.
i have one of the Conair ones that fits either the cream or the gel. it works great BUT i stopped after i started getting black flakes in the lather (only did this when used in the warmer) and my rinse water. i dont know if its mold or what. i took it apart but the heating element i couldnt open since it took a really small phillips head sd and i swear they felt like they were torqued or locked down so i didnt proceed any further. i dont remember if its the cream im using now (barbasol). seems like it was picky about what can i used. gillette foamy for some reason you had to push down like the dicken on the dispenser to get anything out and it took forever, like a slow ice dispenser you could reach in and grab some ice quicker than holding the button down. i dont know if the gillette can's dispenser stem was too small and it only moved a little letting out a small amount of cream to be heated or what. it worked fine using it like it came off the shelf. dont remember if i got the black flakes using it or not. all in all i was happy til i started getting those flakes. if you hate the coldness of the gels it will get it nice and warm (i dont like gels they irritate my lip). if you use old spice, the .99 cent stuff if you have the temp up to high it will turn it to soup so everytime you do a down stroke you end up with lather on your chest. im not saying to not buy one because who knows if i could get those screws out and see whats in there it may clean up but i wont be buying another one to replace it. maybe since i tried gel and cream at various times they reacted to each other or something i dont now. if i had to buy again i would have gotten just the one that heats the cream like you posted a pic of, but it was cheaper for the one that did both. maybe i got what i paid for. this is one of the reasons why im switching to safety razors and a brush soap/cream.
One more user of the Conair. I actually like it, though. Is using soaps and other stuff better? Maybe, but this has its place too. The feeling of very warm lather (gets downright hot if you leave it on and it cycles a few times turning itself off and on) is pretty intense. I use it regularly in my rotation of shaving soaps...
I used them a few times when I was younger. They work pretty good. You have to make sure that your favorite can of goop will fit it though! My advice to you, don't waste the time or money, find a nice shave soap and make your own lather. It makes the morning routine of shaving alot more interesting and relaxing! But watch out. If you go into Straight Razors, there's this disease that you can get called R.A.D. (razor acquisition disease {or disorder}). I should know, I got it!
