Was I really out of line here...?

I saw this razor-lot for sale for $400 OR Best Offer.
I looked through the razors, did some quick/rough calculations in my head and thought the seller wasn't way off but maybe they were more like $275 or so. This was a big lot with a lot of razors but many looked to be in so-so condition and at least half of them were very common razors that never seems to even sell. I actually kinda like cleaning up razors and thought this could be a fun thing to go through over the summer.

Seeing that I didn't actually want them to own but wanted to clean them up, take pretty photos of them and sell them individually I sent the seller an offer stating that.

    My message:
    "Hi,
best I could do for you lot would be $125 as the expected retail value of them looks to be about $250-275 if cleaned up, individual nice photos and sold one by one :)
    Kind regards"

So, I was pretty clear with my intentions and my $275 was close to his near-$400 price mark. I was just honest with why I would only offer $125 as to me it would take a lot of effort to get $300 out of that lot.

This is the reply I got back:
I appreciate your offer but you don't have a clue what these are worth..cleaned or not cleaned..I have sold more razors than anyone on ebay for the past three years(call and ask them)...hence the twenty thousand plus feedback..and not all people actually leave feedback so that number is not true..so please take your lowball wanna be player offer and stick it where the sun don't shine. have a good day!

    Ouch.

Now, IF making an offer like the one I did - where I thought I was clear about why I made a lower offer is offensive I must claim ignorance and if you agree with the seller please say so as I'd like to honestly know.

    My reply back
I'm truly sorry in that I didn't mean to offend in any way with my bid and I apologize if my insight into the true value is off.
Best of luck with your sale.

He sounds like a guy I would prefer NOT to do business with.

Only redeeming act would be him to respond to your apology with the following:

"Thank you. I must also apologize for my initial response to your bid. There is really no excuse for me to respond in such a fashion. In the past, I've received many ridiculously low bids on my auction, and I suppose my temper got the best of me. This is not how I prefer to treat my potential customers, so please accept my sincerest apologies for my rude response. I hope we are able to do business in there future. Regards..."

Of course, gauging from his initial response, waiting for this second type of response is probably an exercise in futility.

I'm not really expecting anything along those lines - or any reply at all really - which is fine.
I really do wish him the best of luck in selling the lot. To me it would had been a fun summer project to see what I could make out of it but if this is his core business I can see him being a bit protective about it.

You were just fine with the way you made your offer. He was out of line. Some people just can't be nice.

Ah..eBay. I've ran into many like this on the site. You are not wrong. I really don't understand why he even responded, if he thought it was low, just decline and send thanks for the offer. I don't see anything in your message that would infuriate
some one enough to send that message.

I agree. I would not want to do business with someone like that. I have noticed that some people think because they have "vintage" stuff that they can get a ridiculous price for them. I have seen a lot of this at antique stores or on craigslist. if he wanted more for them then all he had to say was what his rock bottom price would be or just say its not even close. there is no need to send hate mail to someone that's trying to buy something. that's my 2 cents.

This "seller" has more than likely "blocked" you in the system from viewing items for sale. If not, mark the seller as one you don't want to do business with.

He did you a favor by showing his true colors. Nothing to be upset over, Not everyone is nice. Your offer was honest and in good faith. He just chose to say "no, but thank you" the long way.

What a great way to treat a potential customer.
I don't know how you managed to be so polite in your reply.

You weren't out of line with your offer however the seller's response was inappropriate. As Gary said, not a seller to do business with.

Your message was polite and respectful, his response entirely inappropriate. I can only imagine his reaction if you buy something from him and there is a problem.

His parents did a poor job of raising him. Avoid him like the plague, there are plenty of fish in the sea or in this case razors on EBay .

wow.. some people are just disrespectful. I dont know if your offer was to low or not. I do know that YOU know your way around prices for razors and I take you for a reasonable man. You were polite and respective.

Personally I wouldn't wanna do business with a guy like that.

    He was out of line.
He was open to "best offer" #1 and #2 a simple "Thank you, but that doesn't meet my minimum as a selling price" would have been more than sufficient.

    Third point....

Get one of those fancy 3D printers, send the guy the email address for it, (@Omelmad) and print up the batch for the cost of the plastic and he can sell the metal razors to someone else for whatever price he can get. Bonus to you = no clean up, rusted blades, or cooties. QED.

Yeah, you were out of line. :D
You should have sent him this response:

"If my dog had your face I'd shave his butt and teach him to walk backwards."
