Having spent 20 years working in a wood shop I'm a fan of lacquers. Each successive layer melts into the previous forming a tight bond. Some clears are slightly yellow so look for "water white" to avoid tinting with multiple coats although it might be a plus when going over a gold wash.

Deft spray lacquer is widely available in cans, or in quarts and larger sizes if you have the spray equipment. It's nitro based and pretty good lacquer. I've used it many times to finish guitar bodies.

A word of warning though. It's nasty stuff so spray outdoors if you can and better still wear a mask or respirator.

To make my 1955 Red Tip a little more aggressive I shim it with an old blade with the edges trimmed off. It shaves great with a Gillette Spoiler installed. I do miss my 1941 Ranger Tech though. It shaved great with a Feather blade.
