This reminded me of this Czechoslovakian classic - he may like it: A Journey to the Beginning of Time ("Cesta do praveku" - just realized this is the US remake from 1966 - unfortunately the end is missing in the version I linked first, but this one it seems is complete.). If you was a kid in Germany up until the mid to late eighties, you probably watched this in elementary school, especially if you grew up in the GDR (East German title: "Die Reise in die Urwelt" - this seems to be the original I watched, but it's in German).
