Only recently heard the term "cut throat" in reference to a straight razor.
Thought it was harsh and not exactly conducive naming if one is trying to promote straight razor shaving.
See how some may feel that it's ably named and gets to the point of what can happen if you screw up.

Wondered what others thought about it. Is it a geographical term ?

    Geographical term? No idea.

    Doesn't bother me.

This may be unpopular, but I think if someone gets their hackles up over it one way or the other they may be a bit too high strung. Time for a massage and some good conversation.

Call it the ISIS nuke face poop rifle Hello Kitty glitter palace for all I care. As long as I'm not (or anyone else) using it to harm or exploit anybody, have fun with it and just smile :).

Voted that it doesn't bother me either way....if that isn't a little evident.

For what it's worth, I used Google trends to see if it was geographical, looks like it may be. Australia has a high peak for the term cut throat shaving, as does Brazil (odd), and the UK.

No idea of that means geographical, but, it might. Haha

I think cut throat is a misnomer, as the intention is NOT to cut yourself with it. When I hear cut throat I think not of cutting hairs off but of slicing into flesh.

I don't know about geographical, but cowboys and ranchers typically call straight razors, 'cutthroat' razors/shave.

The reference was less about murder, and more about 'the barber will cut your throat if he sneezes while shaving you.'

Looking at the Collins dictionary entry for cut-throat, it appears to be the British English word for the Americanized 'straight razor.'

I think it has to do with the recent popularity of Sweeny Todd, but personally I think it sounds vulgar. Just my opinion.

I dislike the term in the same manner as I dislike the term "wife beater" to refer to tank-style undershirts. I use both and do neither, so I resent the terms and the connotation that by using them I may do the referred actions. When I worked in news I had a reporter ask me if I beat my wife because he could see I had on one of those shirts. Lousy comments like that stick with you.

Good subject for a poll, btw. This is something very interesting to see what people think.

I've seen it mostly used in the UK and Australian references, particularly on those ebay sites.
The use of the term doesn't bother me. I have used it when helping to describe a 'straight razor' to someone completely unfamiliar with the item.

I've always heard them referred to as straight razors until I ran across the www. If someone wants to shave with a cut throat razor, I'm cool with that, as long as I can use my straights.:p

One I find amusing is when someone asks me why I'm shaving with a straight-edge. Since, to me straight-edge refers to a ruler, that sounds like an extreme exercise in futility!

I have heard the term open razor more than cut throat. I'm wouldn't use the term but it doesn't bother me when others do.

    Yep same here

If you look at Ebay UK or AU you well find it quite a bit

I personally think it sounds like someone is trying to sound tough when they use it. It is enough in use online that it should be used as a search term for anything related to straights, which is kind of annoying.

I despise the term "cut-throat". Terms like that is what made my fiancé scared I was going to kill myself when I got my first straight.

I don't really care, doesn't bother me either way.

There is no specific word in korean, it is called a one sided razor or a razor knife. Straights are so uncommon here even if you use one of these names most people will have no idea and you need to show them a picture.

It is what the British call a straight razor.

The term seems silly, bombastic and attention grabbing to me. Like switchblade vs automatic knife. It's just a razor after all.

Not a fan but can't say it bugs me.
If anything I find the term immature.
