This is the thickness or width of a straight razor. It is traditionally measured in 1/8th of an inch increments. So a 5/8 is just over a half inch thick where as 8/8 is an inch thick(BIG BLADE). Most people choose to shave with 5/8, 6/8, and 7/8 blades, but many like to reach for smaller or larger depending on taste. I started on a couple of 5/8 and now use 6/8 & 7/8. Another couple of questions asked about straight razors is usually regarding the grind and tips (points).... Most razors are 'hollow ground'— meaning steel has been ground away from both sides of the blade, resulting in a thinner profile. Personal preference as to which is 'better' for the shave. The tip of the razor varies. Round points are 'safest' for beginners with the spike and Spanish being the most 'hazardous.' The terms Square and Spike points are often used interchangeably, but the square points tend to refer to a more muted tip. Barber's Notch is also referred to as 'hollow point' or 'notch' French point also known as Irish point Old ad with the descriptor 'Hollow Points' and 'Irish Point'
