Hi I was reading some of the threads here - I feel i have the lathering down good and I am working on getting the shave right - WTG, XTG and ATG patterns. What i do after that, is use just a Everyday Signature balm for the after shave.

What should be the routine after your shave? I have seen witch hazel being used in the other threads but is there such a thing as post shave routine other than what you feel is right?

    Thanks!

Cold water is your friend! Splash it on before anything else for a good 40 secs +

Warm water rinse to removes residual lather, cold water rinse to close up pores.
Then follow with splash and or balm as you feel necessary.

Many use the witch hazel in place of an after shave splash.

    My after shave routine:
    1. warm water rinse (to get rid of all lather)
    2. cold water rinse
    3. alum block (antisceptic, closes pores & tones skin)
    4. cold water rinse (to remove the dry alum)
    5. Thayer's Witch Hazel with aloe vera (more toning; healing aloe vera)
    6. after shave

I know it seems like a lot, but my face feels fabulous afterwards.

Whatever doesn't sting. Seriously, I personally do not like the cold water splash, so I use warm water and then use witch hazel followed by Nivea balm or my homemade skin food concoction. As with every other aspect of wet shaving, it will be a YMMV situation.

Thanks for the responses - I haven't looked at an alum stick - and like I said, i use Everyday Jack signature balm.

I'll take what you guys have written and try them out. I do have to say that this seems quite addictive frrom the soaps to the "after" products.

I am sticking with my cartridge for right now until I get the patterns and technique down, then I have been reviewing the DE razors and will go with an inexpensive Parker since I am not sure If i'll like it. Everything in stages, ya know

Thanks again - you guys rock!

  11. After my shave I got with:

    WWR
    CWR
    Alum on still-wet face
Aftershave balm directly following alum without drying

    Leave face to air dry

JayKay 3000 posts and all I got was this lousy title

I wash everything off with warm water. Than do the cold water rinse. Than a balm.

Everything else you do is of your choosing. The only thing that you most deffinitely have to do with whatever your using is the warm and than cold water rinse. You might be able to skip the cold water if using witch hazel, but I dont like astringents so I wouldnt know.

For me, cold water rinse, dry my face, apply moisturizer, then aftershave balm, or splash, get dressed, apply cologne, or EDT, and that's it, khalas--out to the office!

I also really like a product called witch vera...its a cooling aloe vera get with witch hazel ... it is really calming to razor burnt skin.

I'm a firm believer in the cold water splash, if for nothing else, becuase it USUALLY feels good. However, with our sub-zero weather in Chicago, that cold splash ain't sounding too appealing (especially at 5 a.m.). I have been using just a warm water rinse (followed by a/s splash, and then balm) with no ill effects. In fact, my skin looks/feels no different than when I use the cold water. So, as always, YMMV, but the exclusion of the cold water splash has not caused any unwanted developments.

    regards,
    Drew

I agree with the CWR. Especially after a menthol based soap-cream. It really does stop small weepers and closes the pores. I dont do anything special with my post shave routine though.
    WWR
    CWR
90% of time.......shot of some type of balm(Em's ASB, TGR ASB, 444 balm, etc) and my splash of the day. Slap on face an go! The moisturizing splash all at once!

I do use witch hazel on occasion but strictly as an AS. I prefer the alcohol based Thayers lemon. But really prefer Em's witch hazel based lime citrus splash.

A thread I came across (but can no longer find) had the perfect sequence for me.
    1. Warm water rinse
    2. Cold water rinse
    3. Pat dry your face.
Now it's time to give your face a rest!
    4. Clean your razor and brush. Plus you lather bowl if you use one. (I use one.) Always remember to wipe your brush on a dry part of the towel before putting it back on the brush holder.
    5. Comb hair
    6. Put on your antiperspirant.
    7. NOW splash on your Witch Hazel. Or whatever astringent you use.
    8. Put on whatever cologne you use.

Basically you need to give you face a brake after you've stressed it out by shaving. So let it rest before splashing chemicals onto it. I have somewhat sensitive skin and this post shave routine works great for me!
