Ok, gentlemen. So many straight razors out there that what little brain cells I have left, have me asking you members. Which maybe I should have done first. So, what are the best American made straight razors...and you are not limited to just one. If you have 3 or 4 you can list them also. Thanks.
Singing my favorite song A lot of this is personal but personally I will take anything made in NY especially Little Valley NY or that area, many of the Ohio razors are great shavers too.. Shumate is another that comes to mind
That is an interesting 3rd pick. My wife and I were on vacation 6 months ago and looking at a rock dig. They had some old ads on the wall and I saw the Shumate razor. What is really interesting is that I work for Shumate here in Atlanta. We do HVAC all over the state and into near by states!
Are Torre razors out of Worchester, MA good stuff? Seems like that was a major US razor hub at the turn of the 20th century.
The JRTorreys (1858-1963) I've used and some models from the Worcester razor co. (Mass., 1900-1930) were top US-made shavers. I've had very good luck the Union Cutlery razors (SPIKES); Olean, NY—quality American steel. Clauss razors (Fremont, Ohio; 1915-1940) are excellent razors as well. So many choices.....
Man, I didn't get much right about that one. I even recently called it "WOR•chester" to a native of "WOO•ster." He set me straight.
I think so. I have owned several of Union Cutlery Spike razors and found they take a great edge. Good shavers. The majority one finds are 'plain janes' like this one that come in a variety of blade widths. This one is a Spike 'Special', with slightly fancier bolsters & scales.
I like those Spike razors. I am bidding on one on Ebay now. Looking at them got me side tracked when I saw the Union City, Ga razors. Which led me to getting a Dixie. Which was the pre-Union of Union City, Ga razors. I also have a Torrey coming in with 2 other Shumates. Here are my 3 Shumates that are here. No, I do not have SRAD.
I don't know to much about American made razors but I will say this, If they are all like the Kinfolks from Little valley I once had then they are great shavers Man that thing took a super keen edge.
The two best American-made razors I have ever used are Genco, and Wade and Butcher. They do a good job when properly honed and stropped. The Genco actually gives me a better shave than my Dovo.
I have a lot of American made razors and they are all good. Clauss, Hess & T Noonan would be my top 3. I also have an Artraco that knocks my sox off every time I shave with it but finding one of those is pretty difficult
I found this photo of a razor my wife received from her dad. It belonged to his grandfather who was a barber. Turns out there is this razor, and a Wade & Butcher. The wife wants to put them in shadow boxes and give to our daughters but I am trying to convince here to let me buy some eBay finds and use those for the shadow boxes....The girls won't know the difference! My face will! I am trying to bribe her with restorations of her Great Great Grandaddys razors.
I too have a Spike. I believe it's a 1/4-1/2 hollow. Nice shaver and holds a decent edge. It's not fancy, but it's a quality piece.
