to TSD "OTbowhunterBW" I hope you enjoy it here. All I know about straights for sure is I don't enjoy using one. That said we have several members here who will be able to give you sound advice not only on picking a straight, but even more importantly maintaining one. As for a starting shave kit Van der Hagan makes a pretty good kit(brush, mug, VDH Delux soap and stand) at a decent price. You can find them online(amazon is one place), but often you can find get these kits locally at drug or grocery stores even cheaper. I, as did many members, here started with one of these kits. The VDH mug, stand and soap are as good anything out there and the brush is very serviceable until you find which type of brush you want. My son uses my VDH boar brush and stand today. If your interested in pre and post shave lotion/oil I use Corn Huskers Lotion as a preshave and Nivea sensitive post shave balm, both work very well for me and are inexpensive.
second the whipped dog. also gemstar customs. Glen is our in house authority(one of many very informative and helpful people) here at the den..
Welcome to TSD! You'll get lots of good advice here. As mentioned Whipped Dog and Gemstar Customs are both great to deal with. You will get a shave ready straight from either.
Welcome to The Den! Whipped Dog has unseen shave ready straights for a reasonable price. The poor mans strop is a great way to start out. I am still using my poor mans strop on a daily basis even after 2 years.
