I have yet to receive my shipment of the razor starter kit I ordered. I'm just curious, new guys (and if the pros are reading), what blade did you start off with and what success did you have?
Started in 1974 with a Gillette Slim Adjustable and a Gillette blade. Perfect shave every time. Well almost every time.....lol.
There are 2 Gillette packs in that starter kit. I'm trying to go for the one brand that gets the most users. Along with my searching on these forums, I should be good. Thanks BigT.
I too started wet shaving with a Slim. I didn't start until 2011. I first used Wilkinson Sword blades which were horrible. I then jumped around to Astra, Gillette 7 o' clock blue and green, Bluebird, before settling on Personna Lab.
I started with a Muhle R106 and a Merkur blade. STAY AWAY FROM THE MERKUR BLADES!!!! By the time i was done shaving, I had terrible razor burn, nicks, and cuts on my face, and my head was so cut up and scraped that it looked like a pepperoni pizza!
You made an excellent choice my friend! Great razor, not too aggressive. You will enjoy many great shaves with it!
Definitely a good choice on the razor. It's a really nice smooth shaver. With blades, everyone's different. A wise man here told me it's not important where you start. It's only important that you start. So pick whichever one appeals to you and go with it. Once you find a blade that seems to work ok, stick with it for a while and just work on your technique. There's tons of good advice here if you go through and read the stickies in "Shave School" and "Safety Razors" and all the other sections for that matter. Read up and watch some videos before your stuff comes in. Let us know how that first shave goes.
I started with an EJ89 and a box of Personna Lab blues. Both were good choices. Now I've gone straight, though.
I started off with a Lord Platinum blades in an Edwin Jagger DE86. Lord Platinums are a good blade that cost very little and are readily available, they are forgiving of little mistakes and I highly recommend them. You can get 100 for $10 (about $12.50 with shipping) from West Coast Shaving. http://www.westcoastshaving.com/Lord-Platinum-Double-Edge-Razor-Blades-100-Blades_p_299.html
I started with an EJ de89bl, great mild, and forgiving razor... The only blades that were absolutely not acceptable for me were derby and merkur, IMO not even worth trying.
I started with a 1947 Super Speed (the first razor I ever purchased off the bay, before I knew anything about DE razors, I got lucky) and Shark Super Chrome blades. The razor is awesome, I have found the blades to be just fine, not my favorites though. Funny, the guy I bought it from threw in five Lab blades. I went with the Sharks because I liked the package and I didn't know any better. Then I got a sampler and tried various blades, most of them mediocre to bad, frankly. Eventually, I remembered the labs and gave them a shot months later. They are pretty much my favorite blades and were the first bulk purchase I ever made.
I started with a Merkur 34C and a Derby blade...boy howdy, I learned fast that my face neither likes Merkur razors, nor does it like Derby blades! My second razor, a 1949 super speed, is still the most used razor in my stable (followed closely by a Fatboy). My main daily blade is now Astra Green (incomparable price/efficacy).
Started with a Wilkinson classic DE , a cheap plastic little thingy and Wilkinson blades, performed very well for the price
I started with a Feather "Popular" razor and Feather blades. The "popular" is extremely mild- so mild that I could shave with Feather blades and get no nicks. It was a good razor to learn on. In time I moved on to more aggressive pastures.
A concord de and feather blades. Concord is very mild 3 piece. I went with feather blades because they were among the sharpest. My face doesn't do well with blades that aren't super sharp. Since I've bought a merkur futur that I love a Gillette oc new and won a super speed . All amazing razors. Blades I've tried derby personna Wilkinson sword and Gillette 7 o'clock blue and yellow as well as voskhod. Feathers are in a class of their own in comparison. For my face. U will be amazed at the ymmv for blades. Ppl will love blades you hate and hate blades you love
I started out with a Gillette blue tip and derby blades. I could never get a good shave (way too mild)....until I tried a tv superspeed. Then the rest is history!
I.M.O. you made a "GREAT" choice... Of course an EJ89 with a Weber SS BullDog handle is my daily shaver, so I maybe biased..
