Good to find this forum, although reading here, before I got my razor, did cause me a bit of fear and loathing about using a DE safety razor again. Thought I might decapitate myself. When I started shaving back in 1964, or 1965, we didn't know much about most of the stuff discussed here. You just kind of got a razor and started shaving so you could be a manly man like the rest of the manly men. I don't remember having more than one razor or knowing there were bushes and soaps other than what the drug store carried. Don't remember cutting myself more than a couple of times and a little corner of toilet paper took care of that. I used the same razor from '65 until '70 when I got drafted and ended up with a Schick injector that I used until I got out of the Army. Didn't need a razor in the 70s. Made my living playing in rock and roll bands and sported a full beard. Started shaving again in 1981 when I got my first programming job and hit the corporate world. I've just used what ever over the last 25 years, but stayed away from disposables. Anyway, in a supreme act of frugality, I decided I was sick of paying for mach/fusion/mombo blades that really didn't do all that great of a job. Found this site and a couple of others and decided to find a DE like I used when I was a youngster. Found a real nice 1956 Gillette Red Tip on fleaBay. Got some vdh soap and a vdh brush from wally world. Put the soap in my old Micky Mouse mug and had the best shave I've had in years this morning. Felt so good I even splashed a little Old Spice on. Hell, it's 8 hours later and it still feels good. Thanks for the forum and the info about how to find the gear to really shave again. Now, I'm just hoping the antique stores are open tomorrow. One razor may not be enough.
Yep. Frugality lasts about as long as it takes to type your post. That's about right. Welcome to TSD. Glad to have you aboard.
If I buy a few razors and associated items, it's still got to be a lot cheaper than my motorcycle addiction...not to mention practical.
