purpose? you can load more lather into it. It also covers a larger area so applying the lather is different. I think larger brushes make for easier face- lathering. It's also an aesthetic thing. Some folks like the look. I like smaller brushes. I believe the width of the brush part of a brush is called the loft. I'm sure someone will be along to correct me if I'm wrong.
