Prerequisite: Soap can NO LONGER be manufactured. OR no longer using the same formula. i.e. Tallow Williams, Geo. F. Trumper, etc. Please specify.
I got this Klar soap, wood bowl and brush set a while ago and it has been one of my favorite soaps. It was made during the Cold War, as it was made in West Germany, so it could be over thirty years old. The plastic covering was torn around the soap and it's really hard to identify it's scent, but it still performs great. This would be my favorite.......................
i have a container of old english lavender soap , unused .will try it soon. don t own any others unfortunately..
Voted Other, as I loved the old Crabtree and Evelyn triple milled soaps. Sadly, the current formula isn’t in the same ballpark.
Renleigh Shave Soap. I have several pucks (need to get one out) and they are great. Can't find any info on the company so not sure where/when produced but I like it a lot. Better for me than vintage Williams/Colgate.
That one was tough. I picked Old Spice but I could have easily picked Williams. I've got one puck of Seaforth that I've never used so someday I might have to change my vote.
I chose Old Spice, though I haven't used it since it was discontinued. It was the first soap I used when I started shaving and I used it exclusively for over 25 years. To be honest, I'm not sure how it would fare against the huge number of excellent soaps available today, but back then, without the internet, your choice was limited to what was available in local stores, and that wasn't much.
Can y'all compare it to any current soaps for lather qualities? I assume the scent is faded, but might be revived with a splash of Shulton's in the mix. That's one I'm curious about. Need to step up my antique/thrift store game. Folks on the bay asking too much.
It's been so long since I used Old Spice, I could not fairly compare it to any soap I use now. But during the time I used Old Spice, I bought one puck of Yardley (I think I liked the bowl) and went back to Old Spice. I don't remember why, it could be brand loyalty, since I started shaving with Old Spice.
That’s really what you have to do. I got lucky on the pucks I’ve acquired by just being patient and keeping my eyes open. If I have time this weekend maybe I’ll do a few comparison lathers.
I can answer that Rick. The soap lathers like a dream, (B&M) slicker than snot,(Mystic Water) makes a lovely, shiny lather, (AoS Tallow) AND, even without scent added, it has the Shulton Old Spice scent. (nothing compares) Truly, one of the great soaps ever produced. I still have about 2/3 of a puck and one backup. IF you can find a refill puck for less that $25, I would grab it. (Ebay). Perhaps you'll stumble on some in a thrift/antique store. I have never been so fortunate.
AoS tallow but just by a hair over the vintage tallow Old Spice soap. Then again these are the only two vintage soaps I have tried.
