I own a Merkur 38C and I like the way it shaves, but im interested in a open comb to add to my small rotation. What do you guys suggest?
I used a 38c for some time (a good, mild razor!) before jumping into the realm of Open Combs. I had mixed results in the OC venture. On the modern side, the FaTip Piccolo was an inexpensive razor that had going for it a dedicated group of users that vouched for it's use. I found the FaTip significantly more aggressive (fewer strokes required to achiever smoothness) than the 38c. I also found the FaTip's build quality to be lacking and the razor had a real propensity to draw blood unexpectedly. We parted ways. I used vintage Gillette Goodwill OC razor that was milder than the FaTip, yet was simply NOT a comfortable shaver. I refurbished an old Gillette LC (long-comb) New—which turned out to be a lovely OC shaver that was not overly aggressive, and provide good consistent results. Here are three of my four open comb double edged razors. From left to right: Gillette 20s Old Type with ball end handle, Gillette NEW with Bar Handle, Merkur 15c. The heads are very similar, but the Old Type is the most aggressive, the NEW is less aggressive, and the Merkur is rather mild. The Gillette NEW is my favorite.
I'm still weeding through some razors but the one that I fell in love with right away is my Tradere OC 2nd gen.
Hi, Wow! I feel like I'm sitting with the Masters! Very nice razors Gentlemen, and wallpaper for saving and using!!!
I agree with the modern Merkur 41c "1904". It's very mild, but has a vintage look. For a vintage razor I might suggest a Gillette Single Ring. Not as aggressive as the old type, a very nice shave.
New standard is a very nice shave Matador elegante is onethat is a good shave, and not break the bank.
