Which Means What?

I'm never sure which one is being used as against and which one is being used as across. Which is which?

 

I always think of an X at a cross that toppled over... hence across

 

I think ATG is against the grain and ATX is across the grain, but I'm new here

 

ATG against
XTG across

If someone could link to our TSD acronyms and abbreviations thread you'll find them there.
