Hello and thank you for letting me in this wonderful forum. I'm a 53 years old fart and I have been shaving with Gillette cartridges ( sensor) for most of my shaving years. I tried to shave with DE razor 30 years ago which ended in complete disaster. I almost managed to behead myself with the thing. Last week been sick and tired that these expensive cartridges get clogged three or four times during a shave, also costing the world, I decided to give an antique Gillette 'new' DE (1930's) razor I had for display a try and if it worked, with the blade savings I would put my kids through college. I watched a u-tube video how to shave with it ( 30 degree angle, no weight, stretching the skin). What a pleasant revelation that shave was, although as I found out the 'new' razor is an aggressive one, it did give me the perfect shave. Never in my life before have I had such a close shave without any bleeding, (believe me I used to cut myself with the cartridges most of the time). I went on and ordered a British made less aggressive razor but compared to the Gillette New it does not cut as cleanly or as effortlessly or sharply. So I'm now an advocate of aggressive OC razors. I have now on order the Merkur futur and the 34-C HD. I hope they don't disappoint. If you guys, who are far more experienced, know of a razor that is OC, aggressive but shaves smoothly without burns, please reveal yourselves and drop me a line.
Merkur 1904. Open comb but is still pretty mild and if you want it to be more aggressive, just put a Feather in it. I have one and its an absolutely beautiful razor. Im 36 years old and like the name would leave you to believe, its something that my great grandfather would have used. I use a 34C HD over the 1908, simply because I prefer the ease of cleaning and blade replacement of the 2-piece design over the 3-piece 1908 but the 1904 is a razor that I keep in the medicine cabinet because its just so beautiful.
Welcome! You're not an old fart... yet. I love my Gillette Fatty Boy (1958) because it gives me the opportunity to make it as aggressive or mild as I wish. The Slim is also a good choice. Herm
If you can wait til yhe futur arrives, you'll have answered your own question. It'll be that and a bag of chips. Lol The progress is as good, but with a more vintage look.
First, welcome to the Den! I have three Merkur HDs - a 34C,a 34G, and a 34C with a custom red mallee burl handle. I can expect to get a BBS shave with my HDs more often (doesn't happen every time) than with any of my other DEs. My Futur I leave at 3. Folks have said the Futur wide open at 6 is the most agressive razor going that isnt a str8. The most agressive OC DE I have is a Gillette OLD Type. The most agressive OC SE I have is the Gem MicroMatic OPen Comba, aka MMOC. All that said, I have many razor ranging from the very mild Gillette Blue Tip DE to the ones I mentioned and achieved BBS from all of them. Some more often than others, but it has been done; ya just gotta learn how to use the tools ya got.
Welcome, from Texas. Congratulations on your new found hobby. Good luck with saving money. My advice is to just experiment and have fun.
Fatip Grande. It's solid brass, and competitively priced. Most of the time I need to tweak the blade alignment, but it's not a big hassle. Welcome to TSD!
welcome to the first order!....you did GREAT by getting a adjustable razor, that will answer a lot of your questions that none of us can.
Thank you guys for the great comments. while I was away, I ordered a Mahle R 41 which is supposed to be among the most aggressive razors. It's called the beast. Let's see.
Here ya go... http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/safety-razors-my-trip-from-mild-to-aggressive.34763/
If you're an old fart at 53 I'm afraid to guess what I am at 82! I'm also new to wet shaving and this forum. I started my adventure with a double edge Merkur which was nice. Then a fellow on this forum talked about a razor being made by Gillette. It's called the Gillette Guard and it's sold in India. They can be found on ebay and they are cheap-cheap-cheap. I took a chance and ordered some and my search is over. They give me the best shave I've had in a long time.
Right now I think after ordering four more to add to my collection, I'll have to gain a lot more experience with the help of you guys if I'm going to built up any more collection.I hear that those Russian blades called voskhod are very good. At 83 you are a year younger than my father and he is getting on fine, I hope you are the same. His blood pressure is lower than mine.
It is the most aggressive and you need to be on your toes with that one or else. It's my favorite DE hands down. Perfect shave every time.
