    Hi Guys,
I'm a new poster here and I'm hoping someone can help!
I bought a wieshi razor a few months ago w/ a hundred backup blades. I've really liked the razor but this AM I went to change the blade and the mechanism (or something) is not working or allowing me to open the razor up to switch blades. Is there a workaround or way to open this without messing the razor up?
My big supply of blades are Sharp blades but the stuck blade is Dorco. I'm not sure if this makes a difference.
Unfortunately, I'm living overseas now so just returning the stuff won't be an option.
    Thanks for any help.

    Welcome to TSD!
If it's stuck it is either from being full of gunk (dried shave cream, hair, etc.) or the mechanism is already broken. I'd soak it in water for a long time to try to loosen up the mechanism. If that doesn't work, maybe try some lube spray (WD-40 or similar). I'd make the lube spray a last resort as I'm not sure what it will do to the finish (I'd guess it's OK but not sure).

    plus side

look at the plus side you got to use it 4 a few months. now you get to buy a new one. I suggest an edwin jagger 89l about 33 dollars. or Merkur 38c about 44. they will last much longer.

As Erik mentioned, it could be due to clogging up by soap, cream and/or hairs.

Or the mechanism got stuck due to lack of lubricant or a flaw in the system.....

Try soaking it to dissovle the clogging and clean it well. Lubricate it mildly with WD40 or the likes and that should do the trick.

If not, then I'm affraid that it broke down and you will have to look for another razor my friend.......

But let's hope for the positive side of this story :happy088

    Thanks

I'll give your suggestions a try. Very strange as the blade was only in there for a little over a week and I would think the mechanism would last longer than a few months?
I'm in Korea now and the Donco blades are made here. So I'm hoping I can buy a DE razor here and not sit on a hundred replacement blades (or switch back to disposible or electric razing.
I'll let people know what happens.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no........:signs131

Don't go back to disposable or electric!!!

It should be possible for you to find something else if this isn't working out ;)

Otherwise we'll have to set up a special fund for you :D

Try soaking it in Scrubbing Bubbles. If that doesn't work buy a Merkur or Edwin Jagger.

If you have trouble finding a decent DE where you are, let us know; I, for one, hava a 40's SuperSpeed that I'd be happy to let you have for free.

  10. Well,

I wouldn't recommend this on the aluminum weishi as the material wouldn't handle the chemicals well. I tried it on my wife's weishi and it got a bit lumpy on the top. I would recommending trying cleaning the razor at least once a week with alcohol and a q-tip.

If it is a chome than i think that suggestion would be fine, i am not sure about the ones that are in color though.

Also, check the sides for anything stuck in there like hairs or soap.

    Have a great shave!

Well, the Weishi chapter may be coming to an end. I was able to "fix" it with of all things a giant rubber band for torque. The razor worked ok for awhile but continued to freeze up as some others have reported on Amazon. I tried some DW40 and while it loosened up the mechanism you can see the top "wings" are closing but loose. It seems this will leave the razor with wiggle room which is likely to cause cuts.

I spent a good part of today wandering Seoul, Korea looking for shops. Unfortunately, this is a totally electronics obsessed world here in Korea......I'll check in with some of my older Korean co-workers and maybe they'll know where to pick one up. I'm curious though - what is the deal with the Superspeed? After struggling with the Weishi I was suprised to see others posting stories of "decades" of use without problems on the better razors....amazing.

My apologies for not getting back sooner to the nice followups here on this board. I've been a bit crazed here settling in in a new country etc..

    Again, thanks for the input!

It's a major difference in overall build quality. The Weishi is a cheaply made piece of junk. It's not designed to last.

The Gillette Superspeed was built with pride by Gillette, and built with a lot of care. It's hard to make money selling razor blades, if a user's razor is broken. As such, these solid brass pieces are still going strong today, as they were built with long term usage in mind.

Gillette always made their money selling the replacement blades, not the razor itself. (this is still the case today). They even took a loss on the razor itself to ensure that the user would come back to buy blades.

The 40's style Superspeed that someone offered to send you for free above, is 60-70 years old, but built so well, that it will probably outlast you, and still be fully functional. It's says a lot about overall build quality that a 70 year old razor still performs as well today, as it did the day it was first made. Quality like that is nearly non-existent in today's world.

The Superspeed has gone to a new home in the meantime, but I could scare you up a Gillette Tech if you like - PM if you're interested.

    Best Regards
