At my grandpas i found and bought 4 of these pucks and when I got home I slapped it in a mug and lathered it up with my GBS synthetic shave brush and it was terrific so worth the $2 compared to the $4 for Van der hegan luxury soap also it smelled great finished the shave with aqua velva and I was good 10/10

    UPDATE
i did a lather off with my willams modern shave soap with plenty of water
Van Der Hegan deluxe shave soap and Van Der Hegan luxury shave soap and its no surprise who won the winner Van Der Hegan luxury more protection more soap for money
the loser Williams less protection of them all and smelled like fruit loops lol
so the end of this is don't mess with Williams have it in you're rotation for nostalgia but other than that just nope

Williams is good Shaving Soap. I have it and use it. Good stand-by soap. Lathers good.

Hmm.. I have done 2 test lathers with Williams. It's not terrific for me =P

But I'm not giving up on it

Try soaking it in a cup of water for 4-6 hours before attempting to make lather with it.

Really? I have soaked it 20-30 minutes before test lathering it. I have grated it and pressed it into a little container with lid. Can I still soak it 4-6 hours?

Personally, any soap that requires that sort of pre-planning/preparation is not worth it to me.
There are just too many good alternatives out there that will lather very easily. :)

I have one puck of Williams. my mom have it to me, it's ancient. not much scent but lathers ok. is the old Williams better than new?

I believe the old has a slightly different formulation which requires only 3-5 hours of prolonged soaking in order to get halfway-decent lather, vs the new Williams 4-6 hours. ;):D

I use the post 2004 Combe version of Williams regularly with no problem whatsoever. I don't soak it or use any other wizardry at all to get it to perform, just load a damp brush and lather it in a bowl with a bit of water. I really wonder why some guys have so much trouble with it or why they have to do all the soaking etc to get it to work.

Honestly, my guess would be the hardness of your water is just right.

Yeah, that's my thought too. But I don't think you need to do that with Williams. I tried it once. I didn't do anything crazy to it. I built a decent lather and shaved with it. No incantations or rituals. I just can't stand the smell. Should ward of mosquitos though.

Could always be worse, at least it's not made out of cheap "pot metal"!:happy108:

Yeah, nothing worse than dropping your pot metal soap in the sink and having it break.
