1. Hey y'all Suth'nuhs, I passed by a W-D today that's not on my normal route. Never been to one before and didn't have time to stop. Anyone here tell me how it compares with, say, Publix, Kroger, etc, price-wise and on selection? If it's nothing special, I won't make a special trip. Thanks in advance.
  2. Here in central Florida, I would say it goes like this:
Publix - highest prices, great selections, best service, best birthday cakes
Winn Dixie - lower prices than publix, good selections, but still high quality and price
Aldins (no Kroger's near me) - lowest prices, limited selections, No service (you're on your own)

  3. Aldins...you mean Aldi?

I still miss Meijer from Ohio and points north. Unusual and interesting selection on some stuff and when they put something on clearance they didn't mess around, they for real wanted to be rid of it.
  4. Been reading since I posted this, in the past people said WD had better meat (not deli) than Publix, and I've been in the mood for a steak.
  5. They claimed to be the beef people. I'm mostly happy with the meats from them, normally a nice selection at a better price than publix. Way better than Walmart grocery.
They'll cut whatever you like during hours when cuts are there.
I've asked to cut a roast into cubes, requested steaks cut 1 1/2" thick, and asked for very lean meats to make jerky, they've always been helpful.

  6. Although I am not a Southerner, I have spent a lot of time in the glorious South while in the military or visiting family. Winn-Dixie is a fairly good grocery, although I generally prefer Kroger for better prices. I haven't been to Publix in years, so a comparison wouldn't be fair.

  7. Winn Dixie cuts their meat in the store and I think it is better than Publix .
  8. Thank you gentlemen, I'll stop by in a few days.
  9. My familiarity with Winn Dixie is from attending NASCAR races in Rockingham North Carolina many years ago. We camped out at the track and bought our camping supplies at the Winn Dixie. They had great streaks. Also, Mark Martin drove the number 60 Winn Dixie Ford. Lots of fond memories.
  10. I worked at one back in high school. I prefer Publix these days because most WD's have not been kept up with as well as Publix has. Their prices were always better and the steaks did seem better too though.

My wife was a cashier when we were pregnant with my son. She went into labor and had to go into work or find someone to cover her shift, according to her boss....I called in and quit for her and told him some choice words about the next time I saw him. An individual problem I know and not a reflection on the chain as a whole but still, they kept him on knowing he was a prick. We point them out just because of the memories but we don't shop there anymore.

  11. I shop at WD often. Love it. Great meat. Maybe a bit more expensive then wally world. Worth it for the service. Great fried chicken in the deli too. Never been to a publix..or whatever you said...
  12. Publix is nicer and has better selection than Winn Dixie in my neck of the woods. There is a fancy Winn Dixie not far from me that has a good meat-and-two bar. No Kroger in Central Alabama.

We use Walmart (order online and pick-up) and Aldi the most. Best prices by far.
  13. Grrrrrrr. People don't even shop anymore..... I bet when you do run in you use the self checkout......:prrr:

  16. Now that's funny :happy097: .... that's why I got rid of my facial hair and keep my hair cut tight; my gray adds 20 years to me. I'm turning 50 next month. :eatdrink013:

  17. It happens more often when I need a haircut. Had not thought of that.

  18. Stopped in. Clean, orderly store, nice bold red color scheme. Meats did look good but only bought some gouda and a few other essentials. They're the only store since Meijer that I've found carries canned apricots, unfortunately these are soaked in Splenda (gag) instead of in juice as Meijer had them. But just drain the can and rinse them in water, they're fine.

  19. Winn Dixie has left our area. The glut of grocery stores edged them out. I have no fewer than 9 grocery stores within a 10 minute drive. They have been gone long enough that I would have a tough time comparing them to the others. But I usually find myself shopping between several stores now to find what I want at prices I am willing to pay.

  20. I’m a 6th generation Florida native. Publix and Winn Dixie were our only options growing up. It used to be Winn Dixie’s beef was notably better, but the service and experience at Publix was notably better. Now I’m not overly impressed with the meat at either place. You can get either one to custom cut what you want, by the way. The advantage to Publix is there store brands are always very high quality and a great value. I find meat and produce are much better at Costco than either of the two.
