I've been reading a bunch of threads and lots of folks mention using witch hazel after shaving and before applying after shave/cologne. So I went looking for some witch hazel and found that Dickenson's and Thayer's cost a bunch when compared to a generic. While reading the labels the only thing really different I could see was using essential oils for scent. Therefore it seems to me that I could get the same soothing results/benefits using a generic (minus scent) instead of using a high price type with scent. Right/wrong??? Whadda think??
I have both Thayer's and Dickinson's. Thayer's wins hands down - no contest. It just FEELS better - slicker I guess. Plus, it comes in scented versions. As far as how well they work, I imagine there's little difference, but since I rarely use the Dickinson's, it's hard to say. Hey, at 8 bucks, it's the cheapest shaving product you're likely to buy.
I bought the store brand since they did not have the one I wanted. Anyways quick question so I usually use Proraso pre/post after I finish shaving and than when I rinse that off after 10 min. or so I apply Clubmans so when would the witch hazel go on? Right before the proraso?
Generally you either use an aftershave balm of traditional alcohol/witch hazel toner like aftershave. I believe the proraso is supposed to be used as a balm before or after shaving. If you use it after shaving I dont think you need to rinse it off. You could in essence use the witch hazel as a toner after it. I would suggest using the witch hazel right after shaving as an aftershave. If you later feel raw, you could than use some balm. I personally only use balm because I'm young and have tight skin, and it makes me feel like my face is put in one of those vacuum sealed food saver bags.
I have used them all.It seems the cheap stuff works just as good for a buck.I use it just like a after shave. Cheers, ROCKET
I agree. You can add soothing oils (Vit E or Jojoba) for feel or essential oils for scent if you want. I'm enjoying amber and sandalwood oils at the moment.
Thanks for the responses guys. Think I'll use the cheap stuff with a little aloe and scent added, happen to have some hanging around.
I've used the generic with no ill effects. I've also used Dickinson's. Don't notice much of a difference.
I like Thayers, but right after a shave it makes my skin too tight. So I keep a bottle from the sampler pack at my desk at work. As the day goes on and my skin gets oily, I splash some on. Very refreshing. The lady loves the rose and cucumber scents. I like lemon.
I went out and got some Thayer's lavender witch hazel with aloe. Should have done this first instead of getting the generic. What a difference! It's marvelous! Won't be without it again.
I use the Dickinsons everyday after shaving and before adding AS. Works great for me plus smells like Tequila IMO. Soothes the face nicely with a bit of cooling effect. Today I used a combo never before tried. Shaved w/ CO Bigelow (proraso), splash of Dickinsons and Proraso AS. Geez, it's five hours later and my face still feels like a popsicle.
Witch Hazel The proraso after shave contains which hazel, it does not dry my skin, and is one of my favorites in my rotation. I looked for the Thayer's Products but could not find the locally, tried GNC, the clerks didn't know what I was talking about.
