I'll keep this short. Basically I need to be shaven to a certain standard at some of the chemical plants I work at. Not wanting to be completely clean shaven i played around until I got this. Yes or no? [IMG]

I'd lose the Charlie Chaplin moustache, and keep the soul patch. You should look into wearing a pencil moustache, you look like you could pull it off.

I wasn't going to bring it up, but since you did, Godwin's Law has been invoked. And since we're on that topic, "can't not" is a double negative. Sorry for being a grammer Nazi. :p

Noo.. I think i CAN use it like that. No?

If I type " I can not be reminded of hitler" then I'm saying that that picture does not remind me.

But if I say "I can't not be reminded hitler" then I'm saying it's impossible not to be reminded of hitler.

Is it not so? Hey.. English is not my first language nor my second haha what do I know

Hmm. Can't is a contraction of cannot, and saying "cannot not" is a double negative at worst and awkward at best. The sentence would be better worded "I cannot help but be reminded of Hitler," though that comes across as rather stilted. *shrug*

    Edit: found a good explanation.
"They're pronounced with special stress and intonation, so that they don't get confused with double negatives that cancel each other out. What these do is bracket differently: [I can't [not tell her]] instead of [I ca[n't not] tell her], which is a normal cancellable double negative. The special bracketing takes [not tell her] as a predicate 'refrain from telling her', and negates that, to produce a meaning of 'not refrain from telling her'. Of course, the pronunciation doesn't come across in writing, so it's ambiguous and confusing, which is normal for English writing."

So you are correct, Omelmad. I apologize.

    I agree! Quick test drive:

So then it would be: I can't refrain from being reminded of Hitler. Right?

I like the look in your avatar better - probably because I'm not a big fan of the soul patch (even though I tried one at one point).
Macaronus has an interesting idea with the thinner moustache.

I might be alone on this one, but I'd loose it all. It doesn't do any good IMHO.

    Wuhoo!

Thanks you for the explanation. I do get it though, that it can be confusing in writing. I was reading it like that Can't [not], so I couldn't see how it would be wrong.

I like the first look, it's what I sport, just let the moustache go to the edge of your lip or even a tiny bit longer. Kind of a Burt Reynolds/Mexican bandit look. That's how I wear mine and based on my experience with those same type of rules in the work place that should pass any safety rules. The pencil doesn't look bad, I'm just not a fan.
All that said I also like your avatar pic the best. Of course having a pretty, smiling lady beside you doesn't hurt either.:)

Lose the facial hair. It makes shaving so much easier, too.
