Well, can you list some well talked about soaps or creams you have tried that just weren't for you. My just not for me list: Tabac Coates Cella Mitchell's wool fat TOBS Avocado Pre de Provence Institut Karite Nancy Boy - signature or replenishing Musgo real Proraso(includes Bigalow) cream and soap - white or green tub Scented glycerin soaps
Maggards London Barbershp Proraso Red (tub) Arko tub, although I did order a stick for travel which will be fine to use once in a while, not in a daily rotation however.
TOBS cream Cella Barrister & Mann Roam (performance is great, could not deal with the scent) MdC (yes, really) Proraso Green (again, just the scent-- smells like diaper rash cream to me)
Synergy Frostbyte Prorasso green Stirling Texas on Fire I still use them from time to time but I don't like the scent of any of them and the Synergy just doesn't seem to lather will or give me a good, comfortable shave.
So far, just a few for me really. Stirling Ozark Mountain. It's one of their top 3 sellers, but I just wasn't into it. I much prefer the Barbershop and the Sharp Dressed Man. C.O. Bigelow Cream. The performance was great, but I'm not a huge menthol fan and the eucalyptus scent is REALLY heavy in this one compared to the Israeli cream I tried before it. Proraso White Pre/Post Shave. Not sure if it was an ingredient or what but after just a couple of days of using this my skin would get really red and itchy. I even set it aside for about a month and then tried it again to make sure.
Any Sterling soap I've tried (7) Green Mountain (vetiver) ok soap too much vetiver, and I like vetiver. Pre/post shave Proraso, a superfluous extra step that didn't improve my shave. Pre de Provence soap. Razorock soaps- the kudos RR receives? I don't get it. Cella- meh Clubman Special Reserve, I started out liking it but it fell out of favor. SWMBO liked it. And... Wait for it.... You know what's coming..... The Veg...GAAAAACKKK!!!!
Any soaps currently available at stores (unfortunately) Anything with menthol (also, unfortunately) Tabac- Yuck...... Like sitting in a musty attic and rubbing an ashtray on your face HTGAM- Middling performance at best and too much cheap cologne smell. The Axe Body Spray of shave soaps in my opinion
Trumpers soaps - I love the scents in fact I think Trumpers scents are my favourite. Just the soaps are too hard to lather. HTGAM - only tried one, the scent was too strong for me, also it reacted badly with my skin, and not as easy to lather as everyone says, at least not for me.
Dislike: Anything by RazoRock Anything by Mama Bear Anything by HTGAM/Phoenix But, the biggest disappointment ever: Scottish Fine Soap. Ugh....
I wished I lived near all these guys.....the only agreement I have is with Omaney regarding Stirling soaps (tried 2 and didnt like the scent or performance).
Anything with a strong scent but especially: Proraso white (I know white has no scent per se, but the smell of it makes me nauseous.) VDH Luxury (I can't use the others because of lanolin) Arko Cella Tabac Most of the aftershaves/colognes/eau de toilettes mentioned here. Anything with lanolin or menthol/eucalyptus, I don't dare try.
You may be the first person I've seen who is even more sensitive to smells and strong additives than I am. I feel your pain....
Curious as to how these soap & cream items make each list: • is it the performance? I understand some some underwhelm the user with poor lather, poor coverage or duration • is it sensitivity? The composition of some soaps/creams WILL cause irritation for certain individuals. • is it fragrance? highly subjective, but critically important for the user. For me, the deal-killer for any soap or cream is poor performance. I haven't had too many soaps that cause irritation or rash. I'm more inclined to use a soap if it passes muster on all three of the questions listed above. Re: fragrance, last May, I did an informal household survey of the soaps fragrances in my possession. Good stink, bad stink?
I must not have tried enough products at this point, as I have not found anything that just wasn't for me. I have a bottle of Tabac AS that I probably will not repurchase, but I don't mind the scent, and the wife likes it. If you had asked me 2 or 3 weeks ago, I would have said the Stirling Port-Au-Prince, but this has really started to grow on me. All of the soaps and creams I have provide good performance for me and I really like the scents so far. This just confirms what I have been telling my wife all along: I haven't tried enough yet and I need more.
