Folks, After finding and watching this video some time ago, I have converted to face lathering with creams, hard soaps/sticks, and soft soaps. I have used this technique with badger, horse hair, boar, and mixed knots. I have used soaps such as: La Toja Stick Savonnerie du Bon Berger Cedar Mandarin Shaving Soap Tabac (I cut off a piece and use it like a stick) MWF (I cut off a piece and use it like a stick) D.R. Harris Cream Krampert’s Frostbite What I like about this is it feels so good and by dipping the brush in to the hot water in the basin, I get warm lather. I have a brush scuttle filled with hot water in which to rest the brush for warm lather during the entire shave.
I think that when face lathering, the whiskers act like the ridges do in a surbyachi or other texurized bowl.
I never saw anyone (my dad and granddad) bowl lathering when I started shaving. I also don't see the advantages of bowl lathering for myself really.
I was using brush and soap for 40 years before I even knew about bowl lathering. To me, a brush is not just to apply the lather, but to work the beard and face in preparation for the shave.
I keep my soap in bowls with screw top lids. It's easy enough to wet a brush. Scrub up the puck and then lather or finish the lather on my face. The puck gets pretty soft with a lidded bowl so my whiskers do most of the lather building. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
on the face lathering. However, I do not see how folks do cold water shaving. Gotta have my warm scuttle lather.
The thing about cold water is that it is always available. Kind of like black coffee. I like that too.
Well I guess I'm in the extreme minority then given that I much prefer bowl lathering. I face lathered for about five or six months because it was a great way to learn how to build a proper lather. In the back of my mind, I was always anticipating switching to bowl lathering at some point and when I finally did, I began enjoying my shaves a lot more. I remove enough skin when I drag the blade across my skin so I don't need to irritate my face any more than necessary by scratching away with the brush.
The guy that posted just before you is also a bowl latherer . It's your lather, build it anyplace you want
