I have a co-worker checking into the possibility of cutting the center out of modern blades so they'll fit my Segal razor. Hope it works! Just couldn't handle the shave with the original Segal blades; too rough.
It's easy to do. Lay a Segal blade on top of a modern blade, trace it with a Sharpie, get out some scissors or tin snips and go to snipping. Or you could do like someone else did... have a friend at a machine shop, if you have such a friend, make you a cutting die... then lay it on the modern blade, give it a good whack with a heavy hammer and you're good to go. Too much work I think but to each his own...
Cool! I would gladly pay for the service, if there is a service provided to punch a pack or to for myself...
I was talking to the guy (Tom) about it. He said the blade would probably too brittle to punch. He was talking something about a hot wire to follow the cut out of the original Segal blade so there's a perfect match. Anybody know anything about this technique? If it works, I'll see what Tom is willing to do as far as a bulk cut. If he's up to it, I'll let you all know.
Not yet. Tom's a pretty busy guy and I don't want to bug him. I have a reminder on my calendar to ask him tomorrow.
Well, Tom got back to me today. Not so great news. The guy he knows who can do this is charging $250 for a programming/set up fee (one time cost) + 200 blades. Of course, once that is paid, the fee per blade goes down dramatically. Still too rich for my blood. I just don't see myself going through that many blades. If any of you are willing to pay the cost, let me know and I'll make what ever arrangements are needed.
Thanks for the update Steve! Yanno, I paid next to nothing for my Segal, and without serviceable blades, it just sits there in the rack. When I get home tonight I am taking the Dremel to it and grind off the raised oval thingamabob and see if a regular DE will lay flat.
The project ended up with less than what I desired. I have a bunch of pics that I will post tomorrow.
Well I tried! I documented the whole process, but in the end, grinding down the jackawatter did nothing to facilitate the use of standard blades.
