Aye..This one has been bantered about somewhat..I did see a wrecked Type G 2 on EBay a couple of years ago where the handle was rotten through to the steel..:)

Exactly - the rest of the razor is electroplated with gold per the stamping. By contrast, the handle is heavily coated with 14K gold which constitutes 1/20th of the weight of the handle per the stamping. :eatdrink047:

They are very thickly Gold plated for sure...They are almost ornamental and wouldn't look out of place in Grandmas best Ornaments Cabinet..A thing of absolute beauty and outstanding workmanship..:)

OK, I have to admit to having looked up the term gold filled when I got my G2. Yes, my inner nerd is being revealed.

And, holding one is a true pleasure. :happy036:

    Some useless trivia to add:
    1946 gold price $38.45 oz.
So if there was a gram of gold used (worth $1.37 then) it would be worth $38.25 today. Still not worth melting it downfor the gold....unless of course you find it in the wild for $12:rofl:

    Rufus T. Late for dinner

    Opinions Wanted

Greetings all, I'm back on the scene and preparing for a 30 day focus on my various injectors over the course of the next 4-5 months.

First up will be my Schick C1 Repeater. I will use it exclusively for the entire month of January.

I am going to use four or five different blade types.

    Question:
If you've used a C1 for any length of time, what was your favorite blade?
If you haven't used a C1, but used a C2/C3, what was your favorite blade for those razors?

I currently have the following blades, that will be manually loaded.
I'm not going to chance using the repeater mechanism for this focus.

    Schick - China
    Schick Platinum - Holland
Schick Ultra Platinum - Holland (1970-ish?)
Schick Plus Platinum - US (1980-ish?)
Feather Pro (Artist Club) Can these be cut down to fit the C1?
Schick Twin Injector (1973) Are these thin enough to fit the C1?

I will attempt to obtain others that come "highly" recommended.

    Many thanks in advance,
    RT

I havent used mine a lot but did prefer the Chick over the Dutch blade in both my C's. Then again I prefer Chick blades to any Ive tried in a Schick.

Funny....this C3 "Schick Simplified Automatic Repeater (I can't get enough of that name...}8^)) for me was a blade equalizer...I tried 2 different generic Personnas..EMS and Long's Drugs aswell as the Chicks and everything was absolutely delightful...I was looking for a discovery..but mine loved everything which I guess I loved aswell, ha ha...I was the one getting the great shaves.....lol!

But if you are going to spend 30 uninterupted days with yours...maybe you will find a blade pecking order...

PS ....BTW....I still smile everytime I think of when I met this razor.....:happy088:

Man...I've been back and forth between these guys....I've ruled out the light brown leather, and will probably end up the other three....but for now....I'm ordering the dark brown leather nato first.....maybe when springtime comes I'll order one of the nylon natos...
Thanks for the imput guys.......and Rufus has a point....When yachting season gets here I'd better snatch up that striped one.....}8^))

@mrchick stealing (er, finding) one in the wild for $12 is the find of the year. ;) ...and it could still be in the running when we reach 2017. Congrats, sir! :happy036:

I hinted a week ago that I would be trying out another Schick that was higher up in the series than my birth year Type I. I'd like to unveil a newly acquired "O" but, no, that is not the case. :(

The oddity that broke the firewall is the short handled Type K. You may remember seeing this one in some past posts from @Billyfergie. However, I'd never seen one offered for sale until very recently. It was listed as a modified razor that someone had inexplicably cut down. When I contacted the seller I learned that she had mistook it and she had the medallion and the case but hadn't realized it was intended to be that length or that the medallion fit as a cap on the end and the three pieces actually did belong together. She agreed to sell all the pieces to me at her original BIN price. :happy088:

So, today's shave review is the K3 which showed up in my mailbox yesterday. :D

The first question was what to load her with. My inclination was to use a Personna as that paired so well with her cousin, the Type H. I also figured it would spice up what was likely a milder razor. The Blademaster - :chores016: - recommended a NOS Schick, perhaps a Krona. Foolishly, I went with my inclination and put in the Personna. I suspect the Personna is just a little too much for the K3. However, the immediate reaction to the first strokes was, "Wow, these Hydro-Magic heads really are smooth." And smooth it was. So on I went with happy abandon. Halfway through the first pass I noticed I had left a couple of weepers in that difficult area between my lip and chin. "Hmmm, how did that happen?", I thought. :signs002:

The first pass provided really good whisker reduction and no more weepers. The second pass was as smooth as the first and was otherwise uneventful. Again, really good whisker reduction. The third pass left a few more weepers in the goatee area and upper lip. There was minimal wet touch up needed and, although I had a really close shave, my face could have been happier with the final treatment. I used some Osma Alum Block and it confirmed that it was a little too close - but fortunately not as bad as I had feared.

I played around a bit with using the rinsing lever mid shave to clean out some accumulated lather that wasn't rinsing easily. I was less than impressed as this didn't seem to make rinsing it off significantly easier. :( I'm generally in favor of "the-fewer-moving-parts-the-better" so this could simply be confirmation bias.

So, what do you call a razor that is silky smooth and aggressive but likely to bite under the radar so to speak? I don't know. That's why my hunch is that the Personna is likely the culprit here - it may be just over the line for this razor. There is one other possible cause and I may be unfairly blaming the Personna. I forgot to use my pre-shave oil today and that has always been a factor in weepers when I've done that before. Only time will tell. In the meantime, here's the unexpected prize that was my last purchase of 2015:

    Bio Palmyra Shaving Cream
    Savile Row 3824
    Schick Type K3
    Personna (1)
    Osma Alum Block
    AOS Lavender After Shave Balm

    Happy shaving - Karl

That's a great catch Karl...The Ladies Eversharp Type K 3 in the Compact Case is Ultra Rare...I have two of them I bought together...I have only ever used NOS Schick Krona & Dutch made Plats & Super Chromium's in mine...Its the same head as the Hydro ..The one thing that I have noticed about the hydro head in general is that its got a similar configuration to the earlier Type E & G Types...That's is to say the front area that touches your face is smaller and more compact than any later Models that have passed through my hands...I find the angle to be quite subtle like the earlier Type E...The head is also quite compact when loading this one as well...Quite easy to run a blade across a stop...I love mine to bits... :love055:
