Thanks Bob - I was leaning towards the quarter Nortons on Whipped Dog's site but this appears to be even more economical. A big shout out also to @Hodge who has offered to PIF me a NOS Rolls blade. It doesn't get any better than that. :happy036:

@spidey9 - Bob - I've started to Google around for lapping film. 3M seems to be the big name - is there any manufacturer or source you'd recommend? Also, one site referred to it as having a peel off backing. Does that mean it's a good idea to have several marble tiles to stick it on or do you put several strips on a single tile? I'm also wondering if this implies a limited life.

Sorry for so many questions - any guidance you can offer is very welcome. :thanks:

I`m also a cheapskate. Got a near BBS this morning with Walmart`s shave secret oil base and canned lather, Used my Schick J1, one pass and a detailed clean-up. Did my bald "spot" with an old Norelco electric, the hairs up there are real fine and sparse (no prep) and finished with a Gillette after shave gel.
I probably spent 5 or 6 cents, not bad for thrift. I`m on a quest to see just how low I can go. When I bottom out, I`ll go back to my regular routine. I`ll let you know what the bottom is.

Hi Bill..The one that I have there was the 2nd Edition of the Floating Head...Your one was released round about the turn of 1971 & was Marketed as the Personna 74 Floating Head that came enclosed with the Legendary 74 single blades..This is the interesting bit...Gillette had just released the first Twin Blade Trac 11 Injector System on the same year 1971..Personna then released the Blue handled Floating head 11 Twin blade the following year or so...In short they are both the same razors & your one will accept Twin blades...For what its worth Bill..You are missing out Big Time not using a Twin blade in your Floating Head..It transform's it into something else & I don't say that Lightly..:p

Hey Billy you all-right, man. Thanks a million. I`ve sorta been thinking about a pal adjustable. My floater does a real good job, especially when my meds fail, and I start the shakes. I used a Gillette Atra trac II for a long time when my tremors started in my 50`s, so I`m used to the double track. As a matter of fact, last Summer I bought a Razolution 4 edges (2 de blades), thinking it would be similar (OUCH). It`s pretty bad. I`m trying to get rid of it, either to a collector ( it`s really nice looking for a display), or to some charity to auction off. BTW where is a good place to buy the doubles? Oh yeah, I got 5/ 74`s with it. IMHO the Tungen 74 blade is the best the world has ever seen, I got over 20 shaves per blade.

    Thanks, Bill

I've used only 3M lapping film. It comes in 9" x 13" sheets. You do NOT want the type with adhesive on the back. I found 4" x 12" marble wall tiles at Home Depot in 3-packs. I glued 2 of them together to raise the work surface to a nice height. Each sheet of lapping film can then be cut in thirds lengthwise to provide 3 properly sized pieces. I can hone about 10 blades before the film starts losing its effectiveness.

The film can be found at fiber optic supply places. Unfortunately a lot of places want to sell you packs of 50 sheets of each grade, enough for several lifetimes. I found individual sheets on Amazon - search for "3m lapping film 9x13 sheets." There is also a guy on ebay that sells an assortment of one sheet of each grade (12. 9, 3, 1 and .3 micron), although he's a little pricey (search ebay for "3m lapping film assortment").

To use, the film and tile are first rinsed thoroughly. It is vital that there not be any dust particles on the tile or film. Then the tile is sprayed with water (you'll need a spray bottle of some sort), the film is placed on it, and the excess water is squeegeed off. A credit card makes a perfectly functional squeegee. The water will cause the film to stick to the tile. If it slides around there is too much water between the film and tile - you need to squeegee more.

To use, more water is sprayed on the film and you're ready to go. You will do most of the work on the coarsest grit film, as this is where the initial blade edge angle, called the bevel, is set. This may take several hundred laps (a lap is back and forth once on each side of the blade). Once the bevel is set you work through the finer grades. I usually do 60 or so laps with each grade.

You can check your work with the jeweler's loupe. The edge should look smooth with a properly set bevel. Also, you should be able to shave arm hair with a properly set bevel. The film leaves scratches on the sides of the of the bevel. Each grade of lapping film should remove the scratches from the previous grade (and leave its own finer scratches). You'll actually need fewer laps with each finer grit.

Here is what my setup looks like:

The Rolls blade won't fit in a stropper handle, so I use electrical tape to give me some "handles." It is not necessary to remove the blade guard.

Here we are in action, although this isn't a Rolls blade:

That's all there is to it. Setting the bevel is the most tedious part, especially if the blade is in rough shape. I actually invested in some DMT diamond "stones" (they're actually steel plates) to expedite setting bevels, although this is getting away from the low budget benefit of film.

The Twin blade are expensive..That's the Downside..I am on my 7th shave with One at the moment tho...The NOS ones come up on EBay from time to time..There is also Current Schick Twins that are made in Japan..I have not used these ones but I know folks that have some & they inform that they are Excellent blades..These are not cheap either..Here is the Link.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172055878710?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

Yeah, I just saw that on eBay, too spendy for me. I1ve been using Ted Pella blades for some time now @ 25 cents each and get at least 5 shaves per. I mostly shave with my Gillette ss 1st pass and the tech on 2nd and clean-up. Personna blues are only 12 to 14 cents each, so 6 shaves.... pretty cheap. There are pluses and minuses on both types. De blades are cheaper but you have to handle them carefully(I use fridge magnets) and drop them into an open wide mouth jar. The injectors are spendier, but you can just shoot them into the jar. Lotsa fun, see ya later and thanks.
