There are a few shaving products & toiletries I make for myself & my husband. I got started with the twin goals of saving money and getting products that were exactly to my liking. Among the things I make are shaving soap, pre-shave oil and scented body powder. Here is one example; Pre-shave oil; 3 Fluid ounces Jojoba oil (you can probably use any skin-safe oil you like) 1 Fluid ounce Castor oil (this is important; it reduces friction on the skin, considerably) 2 teaspoons essential oil (or skin-safe fragrance oil.) I use lavender, but you can use whatever you like. Just put these ingredients in a dark bottle, and shake to mix. BTW, a dark bottle is a good idea, as fragrances are light-sensitive. If you don't add a fragrance, this is probably less important.
I would like also to start doing my own soap, I'd like to read your recipe. Also if you can post a picture of the final product
I make it in 3-lb. batches. You will need the MP soap bases (shaving base, shea butter base, goat milk base), some powdered clay & a large loaf mold. You will also need a means to melt it such as a microwave or double-boiler)and a kitchen scale. Ratio; 2 oz. shaving soap/30 oz shea butter soap/16 oz. goat milk soap. Melt all the bases together & add 1 tbl. of powdered clay. This will take a good bit of stirring, as it isn't easy to mix in. (This is really the only hard part.) Pour the mixture into your loaf mold & allow to set. Since this is a large batch, cooling will take about a day. Once cool, I cut it into 4 ounce bars, which I set aside until I am ready to use them. Then I re-melt them into pucks & add scent, if desired.
@Sara-s ... um... shouldn't this whole thread be in no-holds-barred behind spoiler tags? I mean, I wouldn't want @blanka to see this and start making himself snacks.
That's great, Sara! I have a ton of the shea butter (4+pounds, actually), and plans are to make more pre-shave balm, post shave balm, hand & foot cream, and now I suppose I can add a soap to the plan. The main difference between my pre & post balm is the post may contain some witch hazel and aloe; the pre may have more lanolin and possibly menthol. I say 'may' because no recipe is set in stone yet.
