We went through Smiley's Flea Market looking for Thomas the Train stuff for our youngest grandson. Of course, I began looking for other stuff. Here is my find. For just $1 I got this German made travel razor. Probably pre-WWII. It has PF and Made in Germany engraved on the bottom of the open comb bottom plate. It had an old Personna Electro-Coated Super Stainless blade in it. Anyone know any more about this razor? Before clean up. After clean up.
Looks like an open comb...lol. Nice find and the price is right. Congrats Jim. Nothing better than finding shave gear in the wild.
I think you are right there. You have a good eye. There is no brand other than the FP or PF monogram stamp. Here are some pics after a little Maas Polish.
It looks similar to one that I saw at an antique store in Ormond Beach, Florida. The one I saw the handle came apart and the top part fit into the bottom part and it came in a case about two by two. They wanted 45 bucks which I thought was too much. So I passed. Don
I remembered seeing some of these on the bay, but this was the first in real life. I couldn't pass up this price. I noticed right away that the handle was a two piece. It was later that I realized that the small piece fit inside the bottom piece. I may have to fashion a carrier for it. The head reminds me of the Gillette Old Type. I find that to be quite aggressive. I will give this a try soon. I will just use it for the first pass to get a feel. Later, I will give it a full week.
I believe I have one similar to that, all nickel plated, in a small chrome tuckaway type of case. From what I remember, they are slightly aggressive. I believe they are a knock-off of the Hoffritz Travel Razor. Very nice find.
You should be able to pick up a case on eBay for about $5-10. Merkur made and still makes them. They were often rebranded for various companies. I have an Apollo branded one. The FP marks this one as being made for Fraenkel. http://www.collectorsencyclopedia.com/dettaglio.asp?IdProd=1158
They do give an excellent shave, but I find them a bit too light for my taste. I stuck a Blackbird handle on one, just for kicks a while ago. Got a nice shave, but it was a rather odd looking combination.
