    Grand Blade Trials

    Razor - 1962 (H1) Gillette Slim (9)
    Blade - [IMG] (3)
    Soap - Arko
    Brush - Semogue 620
    Post - Alum

Well another day started with the Veg and I guess I didn't use enough today. Absolutely worthless day at work. But, I came home early, was lazy for awhile and finally decided it was time to shave. Final day on the Falcon which has performed extremely well. Nice carbon blade from Treet who also makes the "Black Beauty" Double Edge blade. My favorite carbon.

The Semogue does nothing but produce lather. And it made a mountain of Arko lather on my face. First pass with the Slim wide open and wow was it noisy. And the feel was, well, let's say aggressive. I should mention that there is no sign of rust on the blade after three days. I have been loosening the doors on it after each shave, dipping in 91% rubbing alcohol, shaking dry and allowing it to dry with the doors partway open in front of my small desk fan each night. Seems to have done the trick. First pass reduction was outstanding. Second pass XTG and I had to play with the angle just a bit to smooth it out. Carbon isn't quite as smooth as stainless, normally, and having it at 9 was a lot of room to work with. Third pass, ATG and Slide and it's done. Alum provided some heat tonight as I thought it would. Hard not to draw some irritation with this blade at that level.

The result, however, is nothing short of a BBS again. Outstanding shave, overall, and this is a carbon blade that could find its way into my collection of "odds and ends" that I like to have around for a change of pace. However, I think the Treet Double Edge is smoother overall, so it will remain my "go to" carbon for those times I'm in the mood. The Falcon, though, is a usable substitute for sure.

Next two days are off for the Trial. I'll be using the Fatip again at least one of the days. Maybe both or I may mix it up on the second day. Trials resume on Tuesday with the Gillette Silver Blue. Not too much mystery on how it will do. At least I can't think there will be any.

Time for a late night snack.

SOTN: Early Sunday start, so an evening shave it is. First go with this large 7/8" Sheffield Frederick Reynolds oldie (You know it's old when the scales declare, "The Old English Razor" :D ). Also some new soaps to try: "Cognac & Cubans" & "Tobacco Leaf & Amber"—both from Crown & Crane. I used the 'Cognac' tonight— Somewhat sweet cigar scent, complex, mellows as you apply the slick, easy-to-make lather. Razor just glides. Splashed on some 'scentless' Snake Bite to finish the job and got a thumbs up on the post-shave scent from SWMBO. :happy088: Look forward to trying the other puck tomorrow. Have a blessed Sunday, gents!

    Hello TSD ;)

    My Sunday out-of-focus-shave:

    rdt1610.png

    - Phoenix & Beau "Spitfire"
    - The Tuxedo
    - Martin 6/8''
    - Tüff sensitiv Rasierwasser

Just had to try out this new straight today, so I declared this my out-of-focus-Sunday. :)

The Tuxedo (fantastic brush) whipped up a nice lather from the Spitfire (fantastic soap). Three passes (WTG, XTG, ATG) - incredibly smooth blade. I had to get used to the weight of the stainless steel scales, but after a few strokes the razor actually felt nicely balanced.

This razor has an interesting sound though - kind of tinny (is that the correct english term?) I guess that's because of the 3/4 hollow grind. My full hollow razors sound much brighter and "clearer", my wedge on the other hand is barely audible.

Not quite BBS, but DFS+ at least. No irritation - very pleasant Sunday shave :happy088:

    Brush: Simpson Special

This was my first shave with this razor. I found it in an antique store some time ago. I honed it yesterday on my Naniwa stones. I was very pleased with the keen edge on this razor. An absolute pleasure....it shaved like a dream.

Just call me crazy old crackstar or whatever else you like because I changed my planned shave again and re-decided to use my Barbon cream. It lathered wonderfully and helped me get a terrific BBS shave. The Astra blade went into retirement after a week of unwavering support. The Don Donato aftershave smells so nice and gave me some pretty good cooling! :happy088: :happy088:

Mastro Livi Stripes CarboInox Italy, 7/8 Full Hollow, Spanish Point

It was quite a long time I was not using Williams mug shaving soap and when I saw it in a shop during my last trip, I bought it right away. And I am very happy I did because I had good memories of this soap, something it was capable to confirm in today's shave. Easy to lather, good in holding water, it was very easy to get a rich lather also thanks to Mastro Livi silver wild badger shave brush, with its amazing juniper aroma because of the handle made from this Mediterranean wood. As for the razor, this fantastic and superb Mastro Livi stripes CarboInox proves to be - shave after shave - a magnificent shaver giving a super velvety and smooth BBS. I also like the scales because of the Italian flag insert: jade, fossil mammoth ivory and coral. The final touch has been provided by Layrite Bay Rum No. 9, one of the very few around having a real and genuine bay leaf fragrance.
    • Pre-Shave: RazorGuy Pre-Shave Oil
    • Soap: Williams Mug Shaving Soap
    • Brush: Mastro Livi Silver Wild Badger Double Band, Juniper Handle, 24mm knot
    • Bowl: Bamboo Bowl
    • Strop: Mastro Livi Medium Loom Strop "Coramella Italiana" and Hand Palm
    • Razor: Mastro Livi Stripes CarboInox Italy, 7/8 Full Hollow, Spanish Point
    • Post-Shave: Alum Block
    • Post-Shave: Umbrian Extravirgin Olive Oil
    • After Shave: Layrite Bay Rum No. 9

I bet. It has to be difficult for the people overseas to have to pay international shipping to get certain products.

No doubt, but Maggards now is offering an economy mode for international shipping
