Tom..If that was Me I Would Hone that Blade before Going any Further to See if it Takes a Solid Bevel..Some of that Corrsion Can be More than Skin Deep..Also..Some of the Tempering in these Old Wedge Types Can be Iffy Anyway..No Point in a Resto & Finding a Dud Blade Afterwards..Thats Me Talkin Mind.. Billy..
Billy I plan on doing it this weekend. I did a bread knife on it to remove a small chip. I did do a bit of 1k the steel is pretty darn hard. Almost as hard as your noggin I may go to my 325 diamond to cut thru a bit faster. I hope it has a clean bevel. It will be nice to have a Scottish blade. Tom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
I think Charlie Lewis does a pretty good vinegar treatment video, I thought he had one creating patina with bluing and bread too but I do not see it on his channel. There are a few ways to get the patina look. Let me know if this does not get you where you want to be.
Thank you. That is very helpful. After I set a bevel and see if I have good steel, I will try that. Tom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
After an hour on the 220 and 5 minutes on the 1k I have good steel. Now I can finish this old boy up. Tom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
I used 4 layers and let it wear down some while on the 220 then a fresh 4 layers on 1k that gave a nice small secondary bevel. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Looks like a very good start. How does the edge look, under magnification? I like that you didn't over polish it.
The edge looks really nice under a loop. Very smooth no micro chips. Yes I need to sand some more with the 400 wet/dry. That is as far as I will go with it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
@RezDog The Vinegar did exactly what I was looking for thank you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Excellent. There are a few way to skin that cat. I am glad you are happy with the results, and I think it is looking pretty good. It is more time consuming than bluing or Jax black. My go to these days is Jax, in part because I have it but it is also quick and easy and produces the same results. How are the scales?
One scale appears to be good. It has been soaking in neetsfoot. When I get home I will take it out and look. The other one is toast. Glen offered to see if he has a close match. I will be sending my good one to him to match up. Thank you for your help. It is much appreciated Tom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Finally after months of not finishing the first one. Long story but I kept ordering pins and washers. They kept getting lost in Atlanta before heading to LA. I finally ordered from Maggards and got them in 3 days. All pined and ready for a drive. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
