Are there any military (retired, active, or reserve) that have experience in wetshaving in the field? If so, do you have any stories to share about the experience? Also, I am trying to experiment with different (hopefully less messy and more efficient) techniques in wetshaving with a DE using the same equipment I would have in field training or deployment- Canteen cup, Canteen, Camelback, Leatherman, toiletry bag, etc.. I think I will be sticking with shave soaps and sticks considering they won't melt/explode in the desert heat. I am also trying to find, or create, things that might make the process easier. For example, I have been thinking about a type of canteen scuttle. Some pictures of soldiers shaving in the field from wars past have actually been helpful, if at the very least pretty interesting. :transport024
Of course when I was in 20 years ago during Desert Storm I used a Sensor razor. But my biggest grip was using my compass mirror to shave and the lack of running hot water. I have never like rinsing in the same water through the entire shave
I spent 20 years in the Air Force - 1980-2000. Was blessed enough not to be sent to the field. My hats off to all who have and who are! God bless you all.
It ain't that hard. You're kind of pressed for time regardless of anything when you're in the field. I've shaved with cold water in a canteen cup using a humvee mirror. . . Used a cartridge razor though, I didn't know any better back then. If you're wearing camo, you can get by about 1 day without shaving in the big green army. The last 3 years of my time, I was in the little brown army and shaving wasn't a big deal at all. Especially, when we were deployed.
Mach 3 out of a canteen cup for four years, because I hadn't been enlightened yet. Cammie paint is continuous.
In Zumwalt's Navy..... we shaved when we felt like it . Truth is we patroled the North Atlantic for 18 hrs at a time. Once back at base, we were expect to get presentable post haste. Shaving onboard an Orion was not considered smart. Had the "You use it you clean it" rule. Now my Dad (WW2 guy) would on rare occasions shave with just water and his single edge. I can remember watching him do it on campling trips. He has sence told me it was "the way we did it" back in his service days.
I joined the Navy in 1955 and went through basic in Bainbridge Maryland. The 5 AM inspections were tough and the shave had to be close. I used a Schick injector and a tube of shaving cream hand lathered. That worked for me for 25 years. Then the switch to a Trac II and other Gillette razors . Even though I mostly use vintage Gillette de's now I still enjoy the Schick every couple weeks. Len
