I just started Sweetland by Michael Crumey. He is a local author, so to speak (Newfoundland). His novels take place in the 1800s.

"Just Six Numbers" by Martin Rhys is something you should look at after Hawking. Rhys is a fellow of Physics at Cambridge. The book is an excellent look at the unique physical conditions that must necessarily exist for life to flourish. It deals with Relativity, EMF, Orbital Mechanics and Unified Theory...written before "dark energy" was widely accepted, yet he sees it before the others. His ability to translate complex numerical methods and mathematical argument into common language is special and rare...and it's a short read. I consider it a companion text to "Brief History of Time" and essential geek reading.

(I have a love for Math and Physics, as they quantify the amazing universe God built for us humans on this little blue speck...)

I am loving it so far. And I have the tawny man series and the new Fitz and the fool series to keep the story line going, so lots of reading in my future.

I'm currently reading "Terrible Terry Allen" about one of our lesser known generals from WWII (African and European theaters). Good book but I'm rushing to finish it so I can start the second Atkinson book - The Day of Battle.

I thought Grossman was pretty insightful in On Killing and was excited to get a chance to hear him speak....needless to say he is a much better writer than public speaker. Perhaps he was working on a particular agenda that he had keyed up or was attempting to cater to the audience - either way, a let down.

Read the Necroscope series as a kid. Good series and it's probably time that I revisit them....don't do that with many books. Just can't find the time to squeeze them into my professional reading.
