No I don't normally. I find drying it makes it less flavorful and harsher. And while the filter lessens the flavor a bit, i find it preferable to drying, and the much dreaded "gurgle", lol. Plus, I smoke several bowls a day; which means you will have moisture in excess. If I smoke one bowl, or two well spaced out; not a problem. But 3 or more and it's just a natural occurence. I even once asked Russ Oullette about it once. His preference is for non filtered, and he just runs a pipe cleaner in if needed. And the owner of the tobacco shop that used to be around advised me on filters if I would be smoking many bowls a day, as it would absorb the built up moisture; but that I had to make sure to rotate properly. So if I smoke 7 bowls in 1 day, that pipe had to rest for 7 days before smoking it again. Hence my need for inexpensive pipes, lol. Hard to let one rest if ya have too few.
Yeah, you really do need to rest your pipes in between smokes. Which of course I didn't do early on because I only had 1 or 2 pipes. Then I got another 2 or 3, then I stopped buying them for a while. I have long since resumed, and have enough pipes to let them rest a minimum of 7 days. Resting for 3 days or so should be a minimum if at all possible. That gives them a chance to dry thoroughly, and will help with the gurgles, or so I would think. I believe a good cleaning after each smoke helps also. Generally I will accumulate several smoked pipes, and have a big cleaning session, then let them dry at least one day after cleaning before smoking again
I haven't posted in a bit, as I've been a bit busy to sit down and really enjoy a bowl. Well, tonight we have Exhausted Rooster in my Randy Wiley calabash. This stuff takes to a bit of drying real well!
Thanks. I'very had it a while. I bought it on sale mainly because I love Randy Wileys. They are great smokers and are always beautiful and balanced. As big as this thing looks, it is relatively light and so well balanced that it makes a great clencher.
I'very been eying these for a long time, and 50 bucks for a Savinelli isn't bad at all. Maybe I'love be the guinea pig and pick one up on my next tobacco order, probably next month...
I can believe that it is light and balanced. Good quality briar that is aged and dried will be lighter than it looks.
Burning some Orlik Golden Slices in a Neerup semi-poker. It's a sitter, but not a true poker. Too dark for a pic.
Here's an older pic of the Neerup I'm smoking now. That's a small jar of Bullseye coin flakes with it.
Here's a great article, with some excellent tips for breaking in new pipes further down in the article. http://www.apassionforpipes.com/neills-blog/2013/4/8/taking-a-pipe-from-good-to-great.html
I shall go fix another bowl, Mrs. Samurai fell asleep early, so I get two pipes tonight. Thanks for the link, I had not seen that site.
You are right on with all that. What tobaccos do you prefer? I smoke almost all no filter pipes these days, almost always with non-aromatic (typically) unflavored VaPer and VA. When I started smoking in the early nineties, I smoked aromatics. My experience is that aromatics smoke hotter and wetter than traditional styles. Pipe shape and bowl depth and bend affect all this too. I prefer straight pipes, because I do the pipe cleaner thing mid-bowl if needed. Normally I don't deal with much moisture though, but I will only go over two bowls on the weekend sometimes. I probably have 25 decent pipes in all, but Ive been slowly accumulating for twenty years. All that said, I love my old Kaywoodie drinkless, it is light and smokes great.
This site has a very interesting blog article about Liverpool shapes, Canadians, and Lovats. Quite interesting to me since I had been wanting a Canadian for some time, and had the Chacom Canadian fall in my lap. Additionally, I'm most likely going to order the Savinelli unfinished Liverpool. I see a new obsession developing in my pipe tastes. Edit: sorry, I left the link off, it was late last night! http://www.apassionforpipes.com/neills-blog/?currentPage=2
Some Russ Oulette's Fire Storm in my unknown American bent panel billiard sort of thing. First time with this baccy. It is a vaper with fire cured Kentucky and some Turkish tobacco. I'm expecting a nic and spice bomb, but we'll see. Tin note is ripe plums and spice.
Well, I was right and wrong. While this has a nice spiciness to it, it's not overpewering. What comes forward is the fire cured Kentucky, which has a nice smokiness to it. Combined with the spicy and the sweet virginias, it's like smoking barbecue. That's the best way I can explain it. I'mean thinking some age to sweeten the Virginias and this stuff will really open up. That said, this is an instant favorite from the start. Definitely getting more, some to smoke, some to age. Word of warning about the nic level. I definitely get a buzz on this stuff, which I love, but if you are sensitive to nicotine run, don't walk, away...
