What Phrases or Words Irritate You?

    Screwtape A Shaving Butterfly

No, you can apply that phrase to Aleppo, the police blotter and much of history. You just have to complete the phrase correctly:. "Everything happens for a reason ... and the reason is that many humans are (selfish and immoral) ..."

The times that phrase really irks me are when it is applied to things like earthquakes and tsunamis... Usually in a pious tone of voice by someone giving it as an excuse for doing nothing whatsoever to try to help -- thereby proving once again that many humans are (selfish and immoral) and they're in that number.

"God doesn't give you more than you can handle."
B.S. God isn't giving you things to handle for one thing. For another, if you find yourself dealing with something you cannot handle, which people do, then apparently your faith is flawed? No, that theological stance is flawed. This also gives sanctimonious types a way out of helping those in need.

"There but by the grace of God go I."
Really? You think that person or group has received less grace from God or that God somehow likes you better? No.

"(He/She) is in a better place."
That may or may not be the case, but it's certainly cold comfort at the moment.

"Progressive", that's annoyed me for a while. But, lately it hasn't been annoying me as much. I guess I'm "Progressing".

I probably already discussed my annoyance with "going forward", so I'll let someone else do that one(if he or she feels my pain).

Auto dealerships that put their 'tag' on the rear of my newly purchased automobile. They want to get free advertising on my dollar. Wrong! Same with messages similar to the tag 'sent by tapatalk'.

YMMV...completely unnecessary yet people feel obligated to to use it constantly.

I take it your boss tells you that.
It should be, "Wasted time is wasted money". At least I think so.

that made me think of "Time is of the essence". I mean, how many times do people who say that use the word "essence" in other instances?

to me, it'd be simpler to say "It's up to you".

I am not sure about that. Not everything should be expressed in terms of money.

Wasted time is wasted time you won't get back. Whether that relates to money, opportunity, or maybe nothing is up to you.

    Devil's advocate:

Employer has purchased the employee's finite time with money. If that time is not used according to the employer's purpose, it could be argued that is a direct waste of money. Guarantee they won't get their money back.

When it's about employee time, then I agree. But unless you are self employed, your employee time is limited to 40 ~ 45 hours per week (or at least it should be ... in my job it's often more in peak times).
