Hmmm.... I'm a TOTAL noob but would presume to say that depends on what you consider to be "the perfect straight razor."

Forgot to mention.... I am interested in hearing what the seasoned members think is the perfect SR and why! :eatdrink047:

With so many sizes, styles, weights, ages, what is perfect fo me may not be perfect for you.

There are a number of quality, reputable makers of straight razors— both past and present—available today.
I'm still on a quest for the 'perfect' SR—although I'm unlikely to ever find it. The thrill is in the chase.... :D

Just like soap, brush, or aftershave - you can get opinions but it depends on your face.

    Qualities to consider;
Steel - high carbon, Damascus, Stainless
Grind - thick wedge to thinnest hollow
Tips - Rounded for safety, or spiked for exciting
Scales - traditional, carbon fiber, kamisori style

Welcome to the rabbet hole. I'd suggest starting with a 5/8" round point vintage high carbon steel with "regular" scales. Plenty available, and you can go to the extremes from there.

It changes as my taste change, so almost weekly. There are so many excellent straights avail now both vintage and new, the bigger question is who can hone a razor perfectly? :scared001:

Ya know, ya really shouldn't jerk the newbies like that.
They just may take ya up on it, think all str8s are garbage, then go back to *shudder* carts. :p

    It was funny, though!

I deleted my first response of, "Anything on eBay that says shave ready."

I don't know anything about straights but am interested too, so I can't wait to keep reading this thread. You've already had some straight razor "heavy hitters" chime in...great guys with lots of interesting and fun experience. I suppose we all know that "perfect" is too subjective too put put a blade on, but I look forward to learning more about straights in this post! Thanks! I'm

I absolutely love that quote! I just hope my girlfriend doesn't read it...she's perfect to me, but me to her....???...lol. I really enjoyed your post!

Your response is exactly what I was hoping for! Fun and funny, but brings me to a real question. Both my gf and I are interested in pursuing straight razor shaving. We both enjoy se and de shaving and, in fact, are very comfortable with both experiences. We would certainly trust most all of the tsd members who have classifieds selling razors they describe as "shave ready". Not to hijack this thread, but we are both wary of buying one from eBay described that way. How DO we make our first purchases to ensure that a razor is ready?
***Staff...let me know if I should move my question so I don't interfere with the ops question and responses please. Thanks.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy from iur own @HolyRollah . He has times that he thins out his collection. Perhaps he may be able to give a heads up next time he does.

I appreciate that as at times, I sell a number of straight razors on ebay, all of them labeled "shave ready." ;)
When in doubt, read the seller's feedback history.

I'll pass on the advice given to me: DON'T buy your first straight from eBay! I bought mine from @gssixgun, who I've never heard a bad word said on his honing. If you know nothing about cars, would you buy one sight-unseen from eBay? There's some well respected vendors who sell shave ready razors, and folks here who hone and restore. You owe it to yourself to get a good first razor so you know what to compare all the others to...

I can recommend eBay seller: johnloc1 I know there's at least one other member here that has bought from him besides me. Some of his go for very reasonable prices. All are honed and quite nicely at that.
Look for something 5/8 or 6/8 with a round point.
