Just good old, a little bit of everything thrift stores. You never know what they will have. It funny, in my county, resale stores won't carry shaving gear. They say it's unsanitary, but they will sell you other personal items. In the surrounding county's I have rescued DE, SE, SR, brushes and hones. When I find a good shop and I go back months later, I find them closed up. Start all over again

Just got this Rolls Razor. It seems to be complete. The hone and the leather seem to be in good shape, and there is a new unused blade. All this means, I may be able to get a good shave with it one day. Next stop, clean up.

This hit the mailbox today and is still in as found condition. I will have to figure out how much it comes apart to clean it.

Post 2: brought to you by the number 3 and the letter G

Stopped in a resale shop today and asked if they ever found safety razors. The person said they had three and I could have them for a low cost since they had been in the back stored in a box for several years and they never had anyone else ask about them. Here is what I was handed. Needless to say, I acquired them. I will have to clean them and evaluate them to see if they are in working order. Before you ask, I have plans for them already.

Well, it showed up - [IMG]

I'll get better photos up in a few days, but right now, it's in fantastic shape, for being close to a century old.

Empire Art Silver was the makers mark for E & J. Bass, which operated from the 1890's through 1930. So the youngest it could be is 87 years old. None of the makers mark websites show the particular emblem that's on the bottom of this one - close, but no banana.

The brush itself is two pieces - the smooth (dented) round section unscrews. Where you see bristles is actually filled with jute twine around the outside. I suspect that the way it was made was to build a knot, wind it with twine, stuff it in, then pack the back with some sort of putty - possibly even just Plaster of Paris. Then it was screwed onto the handle.

My initial thought was 'travel razor, missing top finial', with the bristles pointing into the handle, but that makes no sense based on the junk in the top.

The bottom is NOT just a shallow bowl. it's almost a scuttle! There's a deep mug, and what you see in the picture above is a removable shallow dish. Not sure if you loaded soap on top, then created a lather underneath, or just put hot water underneath and lathered on top. More pictures or even a video once I figure out the best way to light it.

So, it's dented, but almost all the plating is intact. The worst wear is where the screw ring would bang into the mug.

Just my opinion but the dent and stuff is just character. Never seen anything like that before. That is a really nice piece of history. Thanks for sharing with us .

Keep us updated on that. That is a very interesting set up . I wouldn't know where to start if I had to use that razor.

Baji Naji - fortune & chance. You were the right person asking the correct question at a fortuitous moment. Are they unused?

No, they were all in use at some point. There is one in better shape and still has a good finish and the numbers still painted. The other two have no paint in the numbers and blemishes on the handles that survived the cleaning process. All seem to open well and the adjuster knob seems to be ok. All in all I got lucky.

Awesome mug and brush you have there. I love the old silver plated shaving mugs and brushes, they have such character. Super jealous right now. THAT was an amazing score!

I'm all about previously loved razors. Abused one, not so much.

I passes on a couple adjustable Gillettes yesterday. A Slim & a FB for eight bucks each gets my attention. These had green corrosion on the bottom half of both handles. Adjusters were stuck, and the doors just wouldn't open fully. I don't mind a used piece, but I don't buy wall hangers.

Those wall hangers can be brought back to life!! Its easy to make the correct adjustments with a screw driver and a crescent wrench. Stuck adjusters just means that there is a little crud in there that needs to be worked out and green corrosion means a little plate loss but a brass wire brush gets rid of that fast enough.

Agreed. It sounds more like they just needed a really long, hot soak and some TLC. Maybe some WD-40 and time in the ultrasonic, at worst.

Feel free to go back, get them, and send them to me. :)

Yeah, I have a Rocket though that defies me at every turn. Hot soaks with Dawn, scrubbing bubbles, a long dip in the ultrasonic, WD 40, and mineral oil all work for a short time then it dries up and the knob becomes almost unturnable again. I have yet to give up but it has become a once in a while project. I will get it working again or I will expire trying.

I do like wall hangers though, especially flare tips. There are so many subtle differences in the lines on the knob and barrel, thickness, and even length. As long as you have one or two in a nice case, seeing the differences really shows the creative level of the craftsmen. Then you see the English bulldog handles which just show a whole new level of beauty.
