Hello, looking for a new de. I currently have a ej de89. Time for something new and looking for advice. I don't think I ever really got a comfortable shave. I was thinking razorock gc .68/.84, the mamba 70 and the sloc. What are you guys thinking? Thanks
Well first welcome from West Tennessee. Try finding a vintage Gillette, there are too many to choose from so do your homework and follow this forum, you will get a lot of ideas which one is for you. At the end you will probably own tons of razors. Sent from my SM-T387V using Tapatalk
Rockwell 2c or 6c- The 2c is all you need, the 6c gives you more versatility if you want it. They are ultra smooth, highly efficient , and very forgiving. The 2c new is $30; the 6c new is $50.
Welcome! Nothing against getting something new, but the DE89 is a pretty good razor. You might consider doing a 30 Day Rule/Focus to see if you can improve the shaves you're getting with it.
What @wristwatchb meant to say was try a 30 Day Rule followed by purchasing a collection of vintage and modern razors, a 10 year supply of blades, a shelf full of soaps and aftershaves, and a few new watches. Then claim you can quit whenever you want for the rest of your life. Honestly the DE89 is a good razor. I'd say the 1950's Gillette Flare Tip Superspeeds are a low cost must try. They can be had for under $10 if you're patient.
Sounds like you've made up your mind. Razorock makes good stuff. Several on here say the Mambas are wonderful. Go for it.
Sorry, I've owned an EJ89 and presently enjoy a Merkur 34C, but almost exclusively use vintage razors.
The EJ DE89 was one of my first DE razors. For that reason it is a keeper. I recently won a Gillette Flair Tip Super Speed in a TSD raffle. I found it to be wonderful to use.
Welcome to TSD @Rob79 Get whatever razor you want, but I'll just throw this out at you. It's the blade that shaves you---not the razor. If you cannot get a comfortable and PERFECT shave from the DE89, it's your technique that needs attention, not a new razor. This is THE forum for helpful and friendly advice. What @wristwatchb said to you was spot on. Pick a soap and a blade and your DE89, make yourself known at the 30DC thread and use the SAME set up for the next 30 shaves. Report your results; ask questions; have fun learning how to master the tools you already own. THEN, by all means, branch out and discover new shave gear.
The DE89 is a really excellent shaver. If you're not getting comfortable shaves with it, I'd recommend trying some new soaps and blades to find something that works better for you. What's your full setup right now? I understand wanting to try a new razor though. The Game Changer gets great reviews so by all means if you want to try it, go for it but I wouldn't expect any revelations. The razors that consistently give me my best results are adjustables because I can dial in the exact right level of aggression to avoid irritation but still get a close shave. My recommendations would be a Parker Variant, Merkur Futur, or Merkur Progress on the more affordable end. If you want to go all out, take a look at the Rex Ambassador.
If you are looking for a more aggressive DE razor, maybe give a Fatip Grande open comb a whirl. All brass, reasonable price. Many years ago I used a EJ DE87 exclusively but having a rather tough set of old whiskers I opted for the Fatip. Very efficient shaver IMHO. Another razor I find efficient yet not quite as aggressive as the Fatip is the RazoRock German 37 slant. And, as others have stated, try the focus group this coming May. It's a great way to dial in your gear & software to get maximum results.
You guys are very helpful. I know most of it is my technique and blade. My current blade is a shark and I really don't care for them. I have an order of Astra sp coming. I did want to try a new razor but I don't want anything that has similarities to my de89. I did checkout the fatip grande, the Karve cb and also a 6c but for some reason I keep going back to razorock and eyeing up the mamba. I had the mamba it my cart would take it out and put in the game changer. I just can't make my mind up. They have a special on the mamba 70 for $49 with a blemish. I have no idea how any of these razors are. I honestly don't care what brand it is either
