SE Shave # 327 - MICROMATIC DECLARATION GROOMING MONDAY

    Rating: 5 / 5

    Razor: GEM Micromatic Open Comb
    Blade: GEM Stainless (7)
Brush: Sawdust Creation Studio Old Cahaba
Lather: Declaration Grooming After the Rain
Aftershave: Declaration Grooming After the Rain
    Additional Care:
    Omega Alum
    Dickenson’s Original Witch Hazel
    Stirling Unscented Glacial Balm

Excellent shave this morning with the MMOC and the DG After the Rain soap and splash combination. The scent profile is as follows: “Like a walk through a forest after a spring shower with notes of wet pine, muted lavender, cedar, and white pepper.”.

The MMOC performed as expected, flawlessly delivering an irritation free and close shave. The alum report was non existent.

We have a beautiful Spring day here on LI. I have been outside doing some yard chores. Prior to this mornings shower and shave I took a forty minute walk around the neighborhood. It felt good to be outside after a few day of being under the weather. Oh yes, this X3 Bar Push workout was fantastic.

I hope you all are enjoying your day.
  7. Thank you Joe. I will just stick with their samples for reasons I have already expressed.

It is Micromatic Monday and it's back with Arko shave soap for me. It was a 2 pass BBS shave without pickups or errors. The alum gave me minimal feedback and the aftershave didn't give me any burn. That's what I call an A shave. Take care.
  12. Another fine MMOC shave Joe.

The day started at 8C here in Perth. Brrrr. Not cold by Northern Hemisphere standards, but the houses here are not insulated well. Belting down with rain atm.

    26 Apr 2023 border.jpg

    Growth: 38 hours
    Lather Bowl: White
Brush: Old Vulfix Pure Badger 24 mm
Razor: Gillette 1939 Popular No46 (1) first time using this.

    From the April Haul

Blade: Gillette Stainless (1) Thought I would give this another go, but with an OC razor this time. Might as well finish the last few of these.
    Face Prep: Usual
    Pre shave: ProRaso Green
Cream/Soap: Arko. 100 circles to load. Back to the puck for the 2nd Pass. Back to the puck for the 3rd pass!
Post Shave: Warm water rinse, cold water rinse. Alum sting lower neck.
Aftershave: Fistful of Brut, I am not trying to nurse this or make it last.

    Passes:
1st pass: WTG only, careful with the OC razor.
2nd pass: More Arko loaded, XTG.
3rd pass: More Arko loaded, mainly XTG, very little ATG needed.
Touch ups: Minimal, not wanting to push the boundaries with the OC. But also, the shave was closer with the OC than yesterday, so much less work was needed to get cleaned up. Definitely more care needed. Not the gay abandon like with the Aristocrat.

Results: Smooth all over, super smooth in some areas, properly exfoliated, and refreshed for the day.
Damage: none. Alum burn: lower neck.

Lessons learnt: Can do this OC thing, it just needs some Zen focus and progressively lighter & shorter strokes as the shave progresses. Towards the end it seems as if the razor/blade won’t pick up all the stubble that I can still feel in certain areas, but not keen on ATG.

Plan: Put this razor at the back of the den for now, or maybe practise dis-assembling. It was cheap enough.

    Happy Tuesday.

  17. Very nice shave and detailed post Chris! Shaving speed comes with experience. There's an old saying, "Don't chase the BBS, let it chase you." My standard is not having blood loss and look clean-shaven after the session. Now, I am not saying to follow my lead, but you will eventually decide what your standard is for a good to excellent shave. It's your face, and therefore, your rules. We are in this hobby because we turned a boring chore into a fun one. Anyway, I am glad your doing much better with your shaves. Enjoy your day!

  18. Well said Joe...I also never chase for BBS, that said, I did when I first started out. One important lesson i have taught myself is I now never aim for perfection with my shaves, as '"Perfection is the enemy of perfectly adequate". My over-zealous passion for perfection was the major unnecessary cause of irritation nicks, & cuts with my shaving.

  20. Good advice Joe and Barry, great comments both.:smiley respect:

As an OCD perfectionist this is something I have to pay attention to with every shave :)

I sometimes think "might just do one pass and leave it at that" but so far have not achieved that

My over-riding motivation is that I don't like the sight of blood! so that helps! My skin feedback generally tells when enough is enough!
