Showdown time...The one DE I haven’t learnt to like is the Muhle Rocca 96. I had tried this in Jan ’23 and Feb ’23 and abandoned it as too aggressive. Time to get back on the horse. Back-to-back shave with the R41 Grande as a backup in case things turned out badly
Razor 1 = Muhle Rocca R96 (86 grams) + Bic (1) Left side of face
Razor 2 = Muhle R41 Grande (92 grams) + Bic (1) Right side of face
Prep = Cold Water Prep and shave, Tabac in a tube as Pre shave
Soap = Sterling Black Cherry: I wanted a known slick soap that I could trust
Brush = Omega Pura Setola 11137. Stiff bristles for the hard soap. Soaked 10 minutes. Loaded straight from the puck 60 cw and 60 ccw thanks Joe
@Trigger
Bowl = Timeless added around 7 cc water in stages. Super lather
Passes = 2 + left ; 2 + right. Didn’t need or want to push things to a 3rd pass
Technique = WTG mostly in 1st pass, then XTG both ways in 2nd pass, then some ATG top lip and bottom lip on both sides
Post = Usual CWR, Alum was a bit stingy left lower neck, not the right, so I can go harder there next time
ASL = Stirling Bay Rum (6 splashes)
Damage = none
Score = 9 + /10
Comments:
Both razors are of similar size and weight, so I feel this was a fair comparison
The Rocca has more blade exposure and more gap than the R41
The R41 seems to clamp the blade more solidly
Fresh Bic blade for each razor to keep things constant. I chose the Bic because it has a similar rating as, but not as sharp as the Feather, didn’t want the feather for these razors at this stage
Both sides turned out super smooth. The left side shave with the Rocca actually turned out smoother than usual
The Rocca gave more blade feedback. The R41 Grande didn’t "feel" as smooth
Both needed setting the cap and the angle correctly. I am less focused on the razor nowadays, more aware of where the cutting edge is and what it is doing at the point of contact. This was easier to find with the Rocca. The Rocca had more audible feedback, similar to the Merkur Progress, which is a plus
I have a slight hand tremor even at the best of times and find that the heavier razors work well to dampen down any tremor. P&G are bragging that they are always innovating. If they want another gimmick then they should look at a razor with a gimble in the handle to smooth things out a bit (tongue in cheek, but hey what’s with the Heated Razor thingy anyway?). I am side tracking…
In the beginning of the year I had thought of getting rid of the Rocca and some other stuff
Today I really liked the way it shaved so it will stay in the Den and will used more often
Safe and happy weekend to one and all
