Still traveling with a Mastro Livi Perugia 13.12.14

One of the pleasures of my business travels is to take with me a Mastro Livi straight razor, something I usually do when I do not need to take a plane. This time I brought with me this Mastro Livi Perugia 13.12.14 - a special razoe made for the first meeting in Perugia - and the more I use it the more I like it. Moreover, at each shave it proves to perform better and better: a preliminary pass on Mastro Livi travel loom strop and then hand palm stropping at the beginning of each pass. Also my pre-shave oil proves to perform very well and, although everything can be improved, I am already happy with it while I'm thinking about a couple of changes in the composition to be done at the next batch.
    • Pre-Shave: RazorGuy Pre-Shave Oil
    • Soap: De Vergulde Hand
    • Brush: Optim'Hom Synthetic 082 J
    • Bowl: Chinese Cheap Bowl
    • Strop: Mastro Livi Travel Loom Strop and Hand Palm
    • Razor: Mastro Livi Perugia 13.12.14, 15/16 Full Hollow, Spanish Point
    • Post-Shave: Alum Block
    • Post-Shave: Umbrian Extravirgin Olive Oil
    • After Shave: Aqua Velva Ice Blue

6/7/15 - Shave #9 of June Blades focus. I have 4 boxes of blades I'd not really tried yet, so I am devoting the next several months to trying them out and using them up. Just opened blade #3 of the Big Ben Super Stainless and it is a good blade in the three razors I'm using.

Prep: warm wash with Kirk's CocoCastile soap
Lather: TSD Lemon & Cedarwood wheat cream
    Brush: Vie-Long 13061M horsehair
    Razor: Gillette New LC
    Blade: Big Ben (1)
    Post: Ogallala Limes & Peppercorn

2 passes plus a little touch up on my jawline and I am ready for a nice Sunday morning.

    Sunday SOTD
Razor: Griffon Antelope #16 11/16 Full Hollow
    British Every-Ready 1912
    Blade: Gem PTFE SS (D7)
Brush: Vie-Long 75th Anniversary LE Two Band
Bowl: Symmetrical Sheet Metal Shave Bowl
    Pre Shave Scrub: RazoRock GLO
Pre Shave Oil: Homemade Jasmine Orange Vanilla
    Shave Cream: Mondial Zagara
    Post: Monster Alum Block
    Aftershave: Fine L’Orange Noir

Took the pic before I jumped in the shower but had to finish up my shave with the 1912/PTFE SS as the Griffon was not cutting it, literally. I did 30 strokes on the bridle strop and 30 on the linen B4 shaving but blade kept skipping. Admit the Zagara cream was probably too thick for a straight razor but should have been a a smooth shave. This straight has only four shaves on it now after being professionally honed so has to be my technique.

Also today was the first time using the Vie-Long 75th Anniversary brush. I REALLY like this brush. Out of the box and not even wet it felt softer on my face than my other 2 band brushes from Shavemac, M&F, Tipsoft, Wiborg, Simpson, Thater. My only other Vie-Long 2 band is the Petree which has more scritch to it and though I haven't tried the Epsilon 2 band from Vie-Long, I'm pretty sure this is the same hair just 24mm instead of 26 and I think a better looking handle. Once brush was soaked and I lathered up for the first time, the tips were indeed soft and had plenty of backbone with just the right amount of splay, or should say splay for the type of lathering that I like to apply. Cant wait to see how this soft this puppy will feel once broken in. Today's shave was with the Mondial Zagara which they stated was a cream but more like a crop to me but I think I will use this brush again tomorrow but try a hard soap to see how it fairs. Have a great Sunday folks.

World Tournament of Blades - Russia vs. the World!!
    June 7, 2015
Prep - Hot shower and towel
    Brush - Omega Pro 48
    Soap - Arko
    Razor - EJ DE 89L
    Blade - [IMG] (1)
    Post - Alum, Nivea Balm

For the first time, I think, since I joined the Den I didn't make a post in a day. Yesterday started very early, ended very late and I just couldn't face grading a blade. Got up and grabbed whatever had a blade in it, did two passes, off to work and came home and crashed. Too much tension and too much work took its toll.

Today, though, we return to the Tournament! We're one day behind which will have me finishing on August 1 but I'm ok with that! We'll call yesterday a delayed round due to "weather". At our last meeting the Sputnik scored a 7. Today, the mysterious Sharp Star goes into the ring. This is a blade I discovered on tryablade.com and really liked. It was a surprise seeing I had never heard of it and still can't find any on the Bay or Amazon. Fortunately as the Russian Blade Czar I found a way to get them. I like them well enough I have 100 in stock. The blade is a Platinum, usually a caution sign for me, but this seems to be the exception to the rule.

I gave the blade a bit of extra challenge today as I had a day and a half growth. I considered delaying the tourney another day but decided against it. Besides, nobody offered me a bribe to fix things. So, lathered up the Arko and went to work. First pass was smooooooooooth. Amazing so given the amount of beard. No nicks, dragging, weepers...just a smooth great pass. Second pass and I was home at a DFS. Truly awesome job. Decided to touch up the neck as that was the only problem area. A couple of Gillette Slide passes later and the baby showed up to say hello. Can't beat that result. Clearly this blade is sharp...like its name says. 1 for that. Smoothness? Oh yeah. Amazingly so even on extra beard. 1 for that. Irritation? What irritation. Ok, very minor on one area where I turned the Gillette Slide upside down but it's a 1. Very comfy alum. And the result? BBS baby...that's a 1

Total score? 4 - Perfect Score!!!!!!! Beats the Voskhod by 1 in the first round but that's ok....they won't meet each other until at least round three, and they each have competition before that.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!
