    FrankenSchick!

I pulled a Hydro out of the travel box. At some point in its life some body cut off the two tabs that keep the blade from falling out when you activate the lever. So when you flipped the lever the blade came flying out. I decided to try and fix it. So I took it apart and shaped two new tabs out of solder. That all went really great! Everything worked like it should. I dissembled everything to get all the old shaving gunk out. While scrubbing the handle the top cracked :angry019:so if I put it back on it will just fall apart. I don't have any wood working skills or I would make a new wood piece for it. So....this is the best I can come up with. :(

I don't use SE razors much, however, I will be starting a SE September Focus on the 1st and I would be happy to post my experiences on your thread.

That would be great.....I think It's great for people who haven't used SE's or Injectors to see and hear how someone whose not an avid fan Of SES feels and reacts to The diferent SE type razors and the discussion of how to shorten the learning curve...
Also As an avid SE fan and Injector Junkie...I love to share the experience with people getting to know them...I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences this SEptember....Bring it On!!

    That looks good.

Was thinking of doing that myself so I can pair the head with a heavier handle.

I almost bid on this. Glad I didn't and maybe you got it a little cheaper as a result! It's one fine looking razor (in addition to being magical...)

HM may become my desert island shaver. Easy to get a close very comfortable shave and easy to clean after you're done.

That's a nice one you have there!

    Hey friends,
I've made a few posts here and gotten some advice from a bunch of you on this thread recently.

There seems to be a lot of activity SE-wise on TSD this month.

The 30-day Focus group has many shavers using SEs this month:
    http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/new-sept-30-day-rule-focus-pic-discussion-thread.46736/

And this thread just popped up as well to celebrate SE SEptember:
    http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/september-2015-discuss-se-safety-razors.46760/

Anyway, I'm posting my daily shaves on those threads and just wanted to thank you all for your help lately by telling you all that after three months of using a DE, I just had one of my best shaves today, with my first shave using an SE!

Here's my first thoughts on it.
Hope to see you all on those threads as well.
    Cheers!

    Single-Edge SEptember
    Injectors and perhaps a GEM

During this first week, my first with injectors, I’ll look to familiarize myself with them by starting with one that has been described as mild and perhaps move to experiment with others along the aggressiveness spectrum. I’ll be doing SEs all month.

I'm jumping ahead by a day and starting today. (I'm a Monday thru Friday kind of guy because I'm prone to skipping a shave or two on the weekend.

    Hot Shower, Morning Shave
    Soap: Proraso Green
    Brush: Omega Pro 48
Razor: Schick Eversharp Type J3 Golden 500
    Blade: Schick Injector (China) (1)
    TSD Witch Hazel
    Aftershave Cream: Proraso Green
    After Shave: Proraso Green

    Two-pass shave (WTG / ATG).

The grip - obviously lighter than DEs. I chose to start with my longest handled ( and mild) injector razor - providing me the ability to adjust my leverage.

Blade angle / pressure - I started with the flat part of the razor (with the blade) positioned flat against my face. It moved smoothly with hardly any sound. Tilted the handle down slightly and received positive feedback with sound and feel as I thought I had found a good cutting angle. The razor lightness creates a reaction to add pressure. I fought that urge for the most part.

Maneuverability - definitely much easier to approach my trouble spots - jawline areas, neck, that trouble spot just behind the jaw joint under the ear, and trimming around my shaped mustache and goatee. As with pressure, the lightness of the razor can get me in trouble. I could sense a tendency to zip around the face more quickly. In fact I did once and payed the minor price with a weeper / nick. I corrected that by focusing on the length and duration of the stroke - a little longer length and more deliberateness in the stroke. Once I slowed down, I was not aware of any intentional, added pressure to the stroke.

Overall - the shave was outstanding in all aspects - easy to find blade angle, maneuverability, little feeling of irritation (though the aftershave lit me up a bit more than most days. I'll have to be even more aware of blade angle and repeat strokes.

I'd like to avoid jinxing the rest month, but this was as good a shave as I can recall, and I just had one of my best shaves yesterday with an OC. I'm looking forward to the rest of the week with this one.

    Cheers!

    Great write-up!
Question: Is the head on the J3 the same as the mid 1950's Hydro-Magic branded ones?

Well I'm probably the last newbie you should be looking for answers to questions like that. However, I think it was on this thread recently where someone said that - yes, the heads for the hydro-magic versions were all the same except for the gold or silver finish.

I'm sure someone will be along to answer that definitively.

    @Billyfergie ?

Ps - I like the one you picked up recently. Very clean. I have that version as well. Enjoy!

Yeah, the J 3 was made in 1958 -64 as the Golden 500 model.....Schick referred to all these models as "All Razors with Rinsing Lever" ....Some people refer to them as models with Hydro Magic Function...;).
These were all the same heads that was on the Hydro Magic that was made in 1955 - 58 ..:chores016:
