Yes, its always best to clean the sink before using it a a basin for shaving.
    Otherwise….

I definitely like hot water, but then, I shave in the shower.

I clean the sink before running the hot water into it. :)

I cannot shave with cold water, I can grow a respectable full coverage beard in less than 2 days. Cold shaves feels like someone is ripping out my hair by the roots. I have to hot shower before I shave and still cover my face with a hot wet (steaming hot) towel while I make my lather.
My beard grows super fast and thick, unless softened with very hot water, It hurts to shave.

Gotta be hot water for me. I tried cold water shaving during the last cold water Theme Week (next one coming up Jan 20th - Penguin Club Week! :D) Like others have said, cold water shaving feels like I'm pulling the whiskers out rather than cutting them.

Then again, I don't think I'd even USE that gas station bathroom, let alone shave in it LOL
(And if that were in someone's house, I think I'd avoind it like the plague - just to make sure I didn't CATCH the plague) ;)

The sink image reminded me of a particularly filthy bathroom at a notorious party Frat house in my college days….

No, not at all. I would want to shave, not get $&%# faced. ;)

Seriously though, the contaminated water would wash out of the sink and down the drain. If the sink was grimy or cruddy due to normal use, then that just means the bathroom needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. Running some water in a de-crudded sink should be enough to get rid of any nasty contaminants. Or maybe an old-style wash basin would do the trick?
