Hi everyone, I'm new to the DE shaving world, and I was hoping for some recommendations for a starter razor.
You've got single edge, double edge, vintage, modern... You can get a great vintage Gillette Super Speed for less than $20 on the Bay usually, and that is a great start. The Schick injectors are also a great starting razor. Enjoy your stay.
Welcome to The Den! A Gillette ball end tech is a nice shaver to start with and they are inexpensive and plentiful on ebay.
Welcome to The Shave Den, I hope you enjoy your stay! I'm sure Steve aka @swarden43 will be along with his ->click<- message shortly. .
Is there a certain year or model of the super speed or ball end tech that's the best to start with . I'm wanting to get into collecting as well.
Welcome to the Den! A vintage Gillette Slim Adjustable is also a nice razor and you can adjust it to suit your needs.
For starting out shaving I would say any SS or ball end tech would be fine, and that makes it easier since you can save some money and get a shaver grade razor. Collecting is something entirely different, with collecting you are going to need to identify them, and the easiest way to do that is by reading and studying. For that I would recommend reading some of the guides in the Safety Razor Master Sticky, and looking over Mr. Razor's website.
Hi! Welcome to the Den. Be sure to sign up for the March Newbie Give-Away. And here ---> *click* is what Bill was talking about - what razor to get.
Wow! looks like I have a lot of research to do. Like many before me I got sucked into the micro touch and almost gave up on the whole DE thing, but after reading up on it and getting some better blades I've decided that it's the way to go.
Since you are new to the Double Edge world, here is the advice I received when I started with a DE and so I freely give it to new users. The most important things in shaving are, your skin and technique. All other things fall in line behind those two things and to support them. Since the skin is a given fixed item, the next major item is technique. It is called THE 30 DAY RULE. THE 30 DAY RULE is as follows: Find a razor, then a blade that will not cause issues with your skin (that may take a few different blades in a sampler pack to find a suitable choice or it maybe the first out of the gate) and select a soap or cream that is easy to generate good lather. Once you find those, and it may take a couple of weeks to find this combination, order a quantity of that blade enough for 30 days, and then spend 30 days using nothing else until you build up your technique. (Note that only one brand blade is used for 30 days after each blade in the sampler pack is tested to make the decision on the blade brand to use for 30 days.) The 30 day clock starts when you have the right blade for you. After 30 days, change one and only one variable and work for another week then change another after another week. At that point you should be able to make better decisions because your technique is now in place. This will help you to avoid buying too much gear and stuff too soon without having the technique down to enjoy it all. This really does work. Oh and one more thing ... Welcome to the Den. We know you'll fit right in. So grab yourself a comfy chair, and give our threads a spin! Burma Shave
This right here is what I would agree with, DE89 is the way to go. The way this head was designed it makes it very easy to find the right angle. Also this razor I would say is a medium aggressive just slightly, as you can get bbs shaves with three passes np once you get comfortable with it. Another option is the Razorock Mission great medium aggressive razor for a great price and the additional blades are a great touch. You can find the mission on ebay and amazon.
