I have a semogue and I have had to reload it in its first week. It breaks I and holds massive amounts in a short amount of time. Mine is very soft and can hold enough lather for 4 passes now that I've had it a few months. Mine is the 1438.
okay, since the brush is just a few weeks old and has been used only 5 or 6 times, patience is the key here, I guess
I tried to pick up a type F on eBay but it went for $110. Much more than I wanted to pay. I'll keep looking.
NOVember - No Variation November 4 Razor - Blade - (4) Brush - Soap - Post - Cold Water, Alum, Aloe Day four and hanging in there with the same setup. Looking a bit rough but it could be worse. I think the added aloe at night has helped. Had a bit of a problem with the lather this morning which is unusual. I think I went just a little too dry on the brush. The load looked good but it turned out a bit thin. It was workable though so off to the shave. Standard technique starting on the right. I was a bit concerned about the cut from yesterday but got past that fine. Finished the right side completely and under the chin, then went left. I ended up doing Japanese grip for the first pass then switched to left hand for the second. On the second neck pass I opened the cut under my chin again. Seems like a daily problem. Need to reassess how I'm getting under there. I also went on the diagonal on the neck, same direction I usually Gillette Slide, but without any sliding motion. I just don't see anything good coming from any horizontal movement with this thing. I noticed at the end I have one very small nick right on the cheekbone on my right side along with a couple of others in that area that have accumulated this week. Another area to focus on getting across a bit more smoothly. Overall a pretty nice CCS that I cooled off and conditioned with aloe. Looks and feels about as good as it has this month so far so that's something. It's Wednesday - you know what that means.
For anyone interested in trying a pain stick, ebay has the CJB for less than $30. Only 3 that i see. If I could find a job I would pick one up. EDIT: also a Sam Seong pain stick for a few $ more.
November 4, 2015 No Variation NoVember This No Variation month is perfect for me to learn skills with new-to-me equipment. Razor: Mongoose B3 Blades: Feather Artist Club Professional (4) Soap: Saponificio Varesino Manna Brush: Omega 31025 Scarlatti Boar AS: Changes at will. Today: Myrsol Blue Razor / Blade - After my usual shave on Tuesday, this morning I woke up with the least amount of growth the day after a shave than ever. I guess that speaks to the quality of the cut of this combo. Thanks to a suggestion from @clint64 I’m working on figuring out the best attack angle around my mustache and goatee/patch with the oversized head of the Mongoose. Otherwise it will require a two-razor shave with an injector doing the trim work. Another great shave today. After the initial impressions from three shaves with this Razor / Blade, my goals for the month are to: develop an efficient two-pass shave pattern eliminating missed spots. develop a trim strategy around facial hair. determine the “best for me” system on number of shaves per blade. I will report as well on the soap / brush combo by the end of the week. Cheers! RT
The CJB is the one I am using this month. I think I actually prefer the grip to the Feather AC SS. The cost on these razors are for the blades. My face doesn't get along well with the Feather blades. I have been enjoying using the Kai blades. To me they feel smoother.
I have used the Progaurds. I didn't notice much of a difference in sharpness. They are less likely to cut as cleanly as a non-guarded blade, but they will still give a lot of irritation if any pressure is used.
I started off with a CJB and Feather Lights. The blade exposure is a lot less. The Proguards I found are slightly more forgiving than the Professionals. The SS is slightly milder than the RG\DX. If you put a Light in it the blade exposure is almost non-existant. Try a Proguard or a Kai Mild maybe?
Nov 5 focus shave 5 I was going to use a soap that I had trouble with in the past but yesterday a new straight arrived, a Jerry Stark 6/8 round point in red&black micarta scales. Since I did not want to wait to shave I decided to go with a soap I know works with straights, AOS tallow sandalwood. I worked the soap like it owed my money and it gave the slick, protective cushiony cream I expected. First the passes were great, no blood and no irritation. On to 75% of a 4th pass and still no blood or irritation. Did the alum test and only the slightest twinges of any reaction. I thought I caught the baby but just DFS. Given the smoothness of the shave I am happy. The razor was listed as 6/8 but it looks and feels like a 5/8. While it shaved great I can tell I prefer a larger blade. The AoS tallow lived up to it's reputation and my experience. Irritation A, closeness B+ AoS Tallow Sandalwood soap M&F Blonde Badger Jerry Stark 6/8 round point Jerks Osage AS Edwin Jagger Aloe ASB The Different Company Rose Povirèe
I tried the Pro Guards too and found that the give the same amount of irritation and don't shave as close. It has a weird feeling and due to the guard you feel like you have to use pressure.... a sure way to let some blood.
