Sounds to me like that would only be the date of the patent. Datecodes can be a bit difficult to see sometimes, IMO. Are you at all familiar with datecodes and other razors? Sorry, but I don't know how new you are to all this? :ashamed001 I'll bring this thread to the attention of someone I know is a bit more knowledgeable on razors.
1932 would be the patent date. I've seen one of these that said pat pending, probably just after the Gillette New. I believe then that this style razor dates from about 1936 through 1938-9, somewhere in this range. Yours then would fall between 1937-9. These are a great razor. I've always liked the style and the shave. Some of the later one's had a realy lousy gold wash over cheap metal and they changed the knurling on the handle. Trying to cut costs I guess, the silver ones are the nicest. IMHO.
I have great picture of underneath the head, but don't have enough posts to post it yet. I have a Fatboy with a date code, but this one does not have one, just the patent number. I'll have to search for that patent number to see if it is in fact a patent number or a year of manufacture. In any case it is from the 30's which makes me very proud to be able to buy it for $1
Safety Razor Net is down, but the time line states that Tech's began production in 1939. I would assume that would be the same for Canada. Since these are 3 piece razors, the components can get scrambled over the years. If yours has 4 triangular shaped slots in the bar guard, it is the first series, and most aggressive. It lasted until around 1954 (not completely sure of date). It should not be date coded. If the bar guard has straight slots it is the second series and is more gentle. It has 4 pockets for the 4 corner prongs of the head to hit into. It may or may not be date coded. The last series has straight slots and cut outs that the 4 corner prongs in the head fit into. I believe these should all be date coded.
hm, according to Canadian Intellectual Property Office, patent number 1932 was registered in 1872 and describes a kettle, not razor. What do you guys think?
For many years, the patent numbers were located on the case and there are few of those around. Sometimes it was on the cardboard box the case came in. The Tech that you have is a 1930'S. Enjoy it!
Found patent for exact razor I have with drawing. The date is not matching, although drawing doesn't have a date, just in description link to patent Perhaps previous poster was correct saying that perhaps the head is from one razor and handle from another. Who knows
FrankenTech Effect There was an older gentleman that posted on B&B talking about how back in the day, parts were often swapped around. I have a nickle plated Tech that I have both the triangular and slotted bar guard for. Top top it off, the triangular slotted one is made in the USA and the straight slotted one is made in England.
I have the same razor, I use it daily. I have the box too, but there isn't anything written on the box except gillette tech and a picture of the King. I also have an English gillette tech made of aluminium I believe. I believe the aluminium gillette is the razor that the Feather Portable was based on.
I just found this site while trying to research an old razor that my husband found while hitting a few yard sales this am. I googled "Gillette Gold Tech Razor" and a link to this thread popped up. Since we frequently find neat old razors at sales, I decided to join the site. This thread has been very helpful. After reading it, I took the razor apart to try to find a pat. date. The underside of the head is marked with the Gillette logo inside the sideways diamond border, MADE IN USA, REGUS and PAT OFF. On the inside of the bottom of the head, in the inset part, it reads "PAT NOS ON PACKAGE". I have the box too but there are no pat. numbers on the box. There is, however, a little paper tag that reads, Gillette GOLD TECH RAZOR, .79 (it had the "cent" symbol after the number but I don't have that key on my keyboard) The handle is the round, ribbed version, not the ball end. After reading here, I told hubby that he might actually want to shave with it. He just bought it because it was so neat looking. But I would still like to try and date it, if possible. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi! Welcome to the Den. For dating a razor, Jody, one of our mods here, has put this together. Be sure to click here and check out lots of other great info! May I also suggest a little intro of yourself over in our newbies section? Lots of fantastic guys AND gals here would like to get to know you. There's also a link there to sign up for a chance at some free goodies (I'd wait for the September give away, though, since August is done, obviously) And, by all means, feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Thank you Steve. I took your advice and posted in the "newbie" section but will wait on the signing up for the free stuff. Thank you also, for the link. It will be very helpful. Susan
