I'm not a huge "brush" guy, If it works then, for the most part I'm good. I an a big family/heirloom guy though. I really enjoy the thought of being about the hand something down that had some thought put into it. So after receiving some wood from my wive family (Hawaiian). I decided to get 2 brush handles turned and topped with silvertips to hand down to my 2 boys. I have to say, I'm really happy with the way they turned out.
adopt me? :happy102 Those are beautiful. I love the one on the right. What type of Wood did you use? Is it Koa (never heard of it before)? It looks very interesting.
Thanks for the nice words. I told the guy to keep them simple and traditional. Other then that, do what he wanted. Koa wood is grown in Hawaii and considered a special wood to those that live there. It's interesting stuff. Curly Koa is pretty popular to use.
That is wonderful. If i ever want to make a brush I might just have to get me so Koa. The grain is interesting and I love the colors.
The grain can vary a good bit from a normal pattern to very curly. There is also "old grown" Koa, basically it that was cut from big koa trees. Here is a pic of the old growth Koa and a new Koa. I'm working on a set of curly Koa scales but don't have a pic . Left is old growth, right is newer. The right one came out redder then i thought after some tung oil.
Wow both of them are beautiful. Don't know which one I like better though. I really do enjoy the red in the wood. Have you assembled the razors? or just have the scales so far?
The ones on the right are for a custom I haven't finished yet. The one the left I just made to see what the wood would look like finished.
:happy102 Those are some great looking brushes. I hope they give you and your sons many years of great shaves.
Do you know what the gentlemen who turned them used to polish them with. They look incredible :shocked003
