If y'all have any interest, I'd happily do another video of using it. Maybe a round 2. I have one already, so I don't mind redoing one.
That's a question I've been wondering about, too. From my reading the vintage OS soap tends to loose it's scent so it's all about the quality of the lather. Besides Stirling there's also B&M and Soap Commander. Probably many others. It would be great to have a quality modern soap in a matching vintage Shulton scent. I dug my Colgate Cup soap out of the inferior container I'd placed it in. It was painted steel and started to rust. After cutting it up I mashed it into an OS mug and added water, left it covered (Betty Crocker cake icing lids fit just right) over night. Today it's softened up so I mushed it all down to make a puck that fills the bottom. While I was cutting it up I noticed there was a whiter skin over the creamier colored inner puck. No discernible scent as is common with vintage soap. Maybe I'll get a better lather? Report to follow after my next use.
Much better lather from the vintage Colgate Cup soap after getting to the good stuff on the inside! Still very little scent beyond slightly soapy. Acceptable glide and residual slip. The lather did not dissipate while I swapped in a fresh blade on the Fat Boy.
I did some research and it appears I picked up 2 pucks of Colgate and only tried and pitched one of them. I found the other buried in a box of extra stuff. I bought the two together so I'm guessing the one I threw away was the same. UPC on the box so I must have the new version. Maybe I'll keep my eye out for an old one and try again.
The barbershop was first. I have seen ads back to 1917. The Cup soap was next and the mug soap last. I have all three. They all seem alike to me. Great easy lather with just a kind of soapy scent. Other then just to say you have it don't spend the money on the vintage OS soap. It will not have much scent and is just another soap. Stirling has a nice scent and lathers great. As far as how different real os and stirling scents are.... I can not help there. They are both OS to me.
Not at all. Only doing things to change lather is molesting. Mixing soaps...Uber lathering...adding glycerin....blooming. You know silly stuff.
To me Sterling Spice smells nothing like V OS. But it is a Great soap and the Scent is Awesome. JMO. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Before my time, but my late grandfather used OS, that's what my mother told me at least. Smells just like Shulton OS eh?
Had to satisfy my curiosity so tonight's shave was with the Colgate Cup Soap and a thoroughly rinsed out brush to preclude any chance of VDH contamination. Can't say I was astounded by the suds -- that'd be overstating it -- but I was very pleasantly surprised. Wasn't expecting much (and indeed get zero scent from it, not even soapishness) but the lather quickly whipped up and was more than good. So now that that's out of my system, the puck - used only once - is standing on its edge to dry. The stamping on both sides is still very legible and I want it to stay that way because I'll include it in The Box for someone else to enjoy (cuz to me, soap is pretty much soap and I'll use anything). Borrowed pic, mine is the one in the middle.
That the Vintage stuff! I suspect the outside of the puck is oxidized since it wasn't meant to sit for decades. If you are considering using it, I'd suggest scraping the surface to see if it's white on the inside. If it's like the puck of Colgate I used, the inside was protected and still lathers well. My single stick of vintage Williams was foil wrapped so it had a little protection from air though it's certainly very dry. I'll agree it's not astonishing, but it's decent. Too much work for Modern Shavers who grew up with canned gel. Having no scent could be a positive quality for folks who prefer unscented. Although I prefer bold scented products I'll snatch it out of The Box if someone doesn't get it first. Thinking I'll add it to my own puck of the same generation and enough Shulton OS to make my own scented soap.
Nope. Not at all. I haven't scented my vintage Williams but I usually add a drop or two of OS aftershave or cologne to the top of my vintage OS soap before making lather. I probably should scent my Williams the next time I use it with a favorite scent.
Nope sorrry. That will melt your skin off. Send it to me and I will dispose of it for you. But really.... I bet you can lather it just as it is. It is a great vintage soap. If you want to get rid of it let me know.
