Welcome aboard Skimmer! I am Joe. Please, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. This thread is all about improving one's technique. Looking forward to your posts.
Okay, so this post is late in the day, but it's when I have a half a minute available, and I'm new here (sorry! Won't use that one TOO much, LOL!). Today, in keeping with Menthol May, here was my shave setup: Prep = Wash face & let warm washcloth (flannel, for you Brits out there) sit, rinse & re-warm, then let it sit on my face again for a bit. Soap = LEA (Productos LEA) hard soap. I love the VERY slight menthol in this because it doesn't assault my nose, but I get just a touch of cooling from the lather. Brush = Razor Emporium synthetic Bowl = pretty china (porcelain) rice bowl I picked up at the grocery store for $1.98 Razor = Edwin Jagger Blade = Silver Star (Egyptian product) on its second day. Passes = 1 on neck, which is a bit irritated from yesterday, 2 on the cheeks. Post = Alum stick, aftershave ASL = Sterling Ramblin' Man balm I had hoped the Silver Star blade would be better (more smooth or just calm) today. It is not. My face does NOT like the combo of this blade and razor to be used upon it. I believe I shan't use these any more. I generally shave every day now (didn't used to), and my skin is very particular about what tools and implements I use-- especially my neck. It is VERY easy for me to feel razor burn on my neck even before I put the alum on it. The plus side is that since I've started (returned to, after a LONG time) using a safety razor, I've not had a single ingrown hair. For a shave anywhere remotely near this close with a cartridge, I'm absolutely guaranteed ingrown hair on my neck. I don't go for BBS-close hardly ever, because I dislike the sting, but this is a good shave. I know the rules are that new-here people should NOT change things for this thread, but I'm changing to a different blade tomorrow. Also, since May is nearly over and it's Menthol May for me, I may try the Lavender soap from Razor Emporium once or twice. It has menthol in it, too, and I just got it to see what it's like. I'd love to try the sampler of Martin de Candre Absinthe, but I cannot see that it has menthol in it, so I shall be disciplined (probably?) about sticking with my two menthol soaps for the rest of the month. (-: OBTW, I have basically zero variation to list on subsequent days. I only started using a brush and traditional shaving soaps very recently, and I'm not a collector, so I have but one razor, etc.
SRS # 1300 Rating: 5 / 5 Razor: Wade & Butcher No. 1 Hollow Ground Brush: Sawdust Creation Studio Malle Burl Lather: Declaration Grooming/Chatillon Lux Nefertiti Aftershave: Chatillon Lux Nerfertiti Additional Care: Omega Alum Dickenson’s Original Witch Hazel Stirling Unscented Glacial Balm Fabulous straight shave today. I did goof up. When I set up this shave I did not realize that it was my 1300th straight razor shave. As a result, I used the WB instead of my first straight razor, the TI Super Gnome. The TI gets the honor for even shave that is a multiple of 25 no matter where it is in the rotation. I will use the TI for tomorrow’s shave.
Excellent first post! It's fine that you have a limited setup. Keep posting and enjoy the experience.
