Yes and no. It may help protect skin as you find technique while you're learning, but it's not an absolute necessity.

I love the Schick Krona, and the Fatip Grande is another favourite if mine ... what should I choose? ;)

Still voted for "mild and smooth".

All razors are mild and smooth if you know the techniques.

What a beautiful description of riding the cap. It can really not go wrong and if it was on the razor package description I think the cart. would be out of business.

I'm going to have to revisit all the blades I didn't think we're any good for me now, this technique is incredible but very logical

I would not bet on that.

If only because Gillette would not let that happen.

I have found that Sharks are good for 2 shaves only but great for those 2 shaves. I haven't gone of Bama's full blade quest but will stick with Feather and GSB in the future. I need to give some Treet, Volshod and a few others a try but the right blade and I really prefer the aggressive OC razor. I think cap is everything but prefer there be no safety bar. Of course I need to get the different razors and techniques a chance too.

Honestly, you won't really find blades any better than GSB or Feather. The cap riding technique has seemed to improve blade life, but I can't really prove it. The great thing about DE blades is the low cost of replacement. Contrary to my experiments, I could argue a case for a fresh blade each shave.

    Other fun blades:

    Bolzano Superinox
    Ladas
    Asco Super Stainless

And as a hat tip to @swarden43 , if you like aggressive geometry, try a Derby for fun. They're not as awful as advertised!

Reading this post and many others throughout the TSD have made me happy with my decision to goto DE shaving.
Eveyone has been helpful with soap, razor, blade and brush suggestions as well as instruction. I have gone from some weepers and mild razor burn to great shaves.
Now my biggest problem is within a short period of time I have accumilated 5 razors, and I have not had the time to use all more than twice.
I pledge never again to go back to cartridge shaving with traditonal shave cream...lol.

Very good sir, same here started wet shaving at 15 because really that's all there was, oh there was can foam, but my Dad said it was too expensive and who knew it wasn't that good for you face, and I went off the reservation for awhile with electric and carts for a short period, but soon got back to my love of wet shaving and have never looked back, oh yeah and then the real addiction started.
